Hi

I planning to adjust my chain, when I undo the rear axle what is the best tool to use. The one that comes with the bike (2 pieces) is a bit crap - the diameter of the nut/bolt is about 35mm - do I really need a socket this big ? It is going to cost about £8 from Halfords.

Also anyone know the best/cheap place to buy a torque wrench so that I can tighten it correctly ?

Any help appreciated....
Russ

Halfords do torque wrenches, the're relativly expensive but good. Got one of the top in a bike mag test, cant remember which one.

You can use a breaker bar to get the nut off, its long so it has excellent leverage. I used an big adjustable spanner to remove the nut. Borrowed a socket to torque it back up when i put it back on...

The good thing about sockets it that you cant round off the nut. its safe.

Have you got a Haynes Manual for your bike. There invaluable. about 17 or 20 quid from Halfords.

Halfrauds torque wrenches are £40~50. I got one from Machine Mart for £15. Seems to be pretty good quality, and definately good enough for how much I'll use it.

Thanks for your help, got the Haynes manual.. ive taken the back wheel off before by using the spanner in the bikes kit, but it was pretty hard work. I think I will take a trip to halfords and get both the big 35mm socket and the wrench and see it as an investment.. give me a shout if you want to borrow either sometime Smile
