I've been looking for something for weekend rides and some commuting (mostly lanes). Seen a WR400F advertised near me but I don't know much about them. Details below:

1999
6000 miles indicated
12 months MOT
History from last few years while current owner has had it
Looks pretty tidy

Looking for guidance on the price as there aren't loads about to see what the market's like. It's up for £1300 - fair?

Couple of questions:
Will it have an ignition key? What should I be checking when I give it a once over?

Thanks guys Smile

My mate has just bought this bike, all i can tell you from what i have learned so far is that it has no key and is a bastard to start if its been stood for more than a couple of days. also his tends to try and break your foot with the kick starter kicking back Sick

I've had a few rides on it and it has plenty of poke and feels nice and stable to ride. It feels a little on the heavy side but i'm used to my 2 stroke so it may be the norm for a 4 stroke.

Think he paid about £1300 for his after a fair bit of hunting around so i'd assume that is a decent price for one of these.

Even a quick look on eBay heralds cheaper, newer bikes.

You could probably get a KTM 400, post 2002 for that sort of money.

Really?? I've had a quick look and not seen anything...

On the subject of KTM - are the service requirements more than for a WR? Oil and filter change once a month is fine, but I don't want to be doing it every other ride.

I bought this for £1200 last year in January and sold it for £1300 in August, 2002 EXC400.

I also sold this 2000 EXC250 for less that a grand a few months ago

If its a 400 4 banger you want I'd go with the EXC400 all day long or even the 520.

I bought this 02 plate 426 for £1000 in april 2011 while still owning my bandit.
It had ignition and pulled like a beast.

https://p1.bikepics.com/2011/12/21/bikepics-2319314-800.jpg

By october I was selling it in bits on ebay beacuse the gearbox destroyed itself and the whole piston underside!
And by the time i'd got the motor out I was left with a bare frame and a buyer for the wheels.
I got my simoleons back as the re-finished barrel cost me nothing and pulled £210 and £430 for the wheels.
Other bike sold and no regrets because despite its 2 rad, oil framed irritations I'd never have properly tasted SM if it wasn't for the old 5 gear Yam.
And thus I wouldn't be where I am now, which is a very good place Cool .

Buy a shoddy WR if like me you enjoy thrashing around on a ticking bomb. But want a taste of the good life.
Buy a decent WR for 3k and still endure regular maintenance for minimal OR/SM riding.
Buy a KTM if you mean business and permentantly ride around knowing your da-bomb because your service intervals are gangsta Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Had my late steel framed 450f for about a year. As long as the valve clearances are right and the decomp is working, there is no reason for it not to go first or second kick. Even after been stood.

Very fast bike. Only issue I had with mine was 4th gear. Pete from this forum sorted it for me by recutting the dogs on the two gears. Other than that, it happily took a pounding for the whole time. From full on off roading, jumps, rivers and crashes. To supermoto track and road riding. Long motorway runs, to twisty riding. Was good for stupidly long wheelies too as it had a decent carb which didnt run dry when on the back wheel.
