Surely yopu mean dipped beam - not main.

My dipped beam is always on unless its very bright/glarey sun. I'd rather not just blend into the glare in that case.

I'm not sure if you should be driving a car with lights on all the time, as there's no problem with seeing a car.

On my bike I ride with them dipped most of the time, never full beam for obvious reasons (unless it is dark and its a nice country lane with noone on).

Dipped beam - used to do main beam when filtering until Met Police said it causes drivers to have the 'rabbit effect'. Drivers look at the light and follow it, and slowly move the car into your path!

Ah yes; main lights, dipped beam - you get the gist of it though.

I use my car lights for the same reason - in a car it's less than the norm to drive with them on, making you stand out that little bit more - and the more help you get to be seen the better in my opinion! Also, in the event of any accident, I'm sure that having your lights on and therefore highly visible, is going to be a positive thing in your defense? (obviously subject to being sat in a glare - like Mcjamweasel highlights - better be a 'shadow' in the glare in that case then!)

On the bike I often do, but not always.

Car only if necessary, I still find car headlights are bright and annoying coming towards me in the daytime, and there's no need. Cars are hardly invisible.

My lights are on all the time.

In most collisions involving bike's, the main reason is that the other person couldn't see them coming. With the lights on i've noticed bikes stand out like a soar thumb especially in traffic.

It can make other drivers see you that extra couple of seconds earlier, which can be crucial.

It's there so why not use it, it could save your life.

Many advanced riders choose not to ride with their lights on, as it's very hard for a car driver to judge speed and distance when all they can see is a light flickering, they tend to rely more on road position techniques for being seen,

good point @carvell - but at least they will have seen you and if their speed perception is diminished, it'll make them think twice before carrying out whatever maneouvre they were going to?

Yeah, I'm kind of intrigued by that advice myself - I've read it in many 'advanced riding' discussions.

It may be relevant on the open road, but in traffic the bike headlights are the thing that really catch your eye as you sit in your cage in the traffic jam. The only bikes that ever manage to surprise me in traffic are the ones that don't filter with their lights on. Confused

As far as im awar its illegal to ride with the "parking" lights on, no idea why...

I don't allways have them on and would be quite peeved if the option was taken away, if your rideing with your lights on in some situations going over bumpy road will make them look as if your flashing at somebody inviteing them to come out of a junction for example (if you flash somebody out of a junction and they collide with something then your responsible by law, flashing lights is only to allert others to your presence, even though barely anyone takes any notice of this), though you are not and make a prompt meeting with their door.

My gps stuff is powered from the lights, so if i'm going any significant distance they stay on usually, but short ride they are often off, not least to prevent my battery going flat (or flater than it would)

I use the "side lights" (a small bulb near the normal headlight bulb) as using dipped or main beam obviously created a beam - hit a bump and the car driver could see it as a flash...and pull out in front of you. Confused
I don't agree with hard-wired dipped beam for the above reason but do think there should be hard-wired "side lights".

To be honest, not unless it's getting dark or there's a very black storm on the way.

You use main beam in heavy traffic?

Ever been in a car and seen a bike come up beind you with main beam on, dazzles the hell out of you and you can't see anything else in the mirror except a dazzling beam, then the car pulls into you.
