Yamaha XJR400 - Knocking issue and various other problems

Hi all,

This bike has always given me trouble, but it recently developed a new problem. Once its warmed up, an audible knock can be heard coming roughly from the area between my feet, reverberating through the footpegs. It's most noticeable at speeds below 40mph, at which point it essentially disappears but seems to increase in frequency as the bike gets faster. My first thought was the chain but that appears fine, and am in the process of looking at the front sprocket but the cover is being a pain to remove.

This is just on top of the myriad other problems! Brakes have gone spongy, clutch persistently rattles and it never idles properly. Never buy a grey import...
