I'm in 2 minds what to do. My bike got written off and am getting a cheque for £2k in the next few days. Im thinking whether to pay off some existing debt or use the money towards a new bike. Without the bike, its taking me 3 hours to cover 28 miles to from home to work and back again in my car. The bike took me half this.

Or I could use half the money for debt and put a grand deposit on a 2nd hand bike maybe? Something like lease hire could be good if they do this on bikes. Your opinions please!

It's never good to have debts hanging over your head, but then as Roxoff says it's summer and you need a bike!
I reckon the half and half (or so...) option is the best one

The boring sensible option

Get out of debt ASAP!

A few mates of mine started off in abit of debt and it quickly snow balled till, now, they owe a small fortune.

A grand could still get you transport for work yes? You could then get some NCB's built up in the mean time.

You could also take into consideration the petrol money you would save on a 3.5 hour journey. Wink

depends on the type of roads you ride on, but i think the senible option would be a second hand commuter bike, and use the rest to get as far out of debt as you can.

Bet that is great fun in rush hour traffic Wink Razz!

Get a bike, you'll hate seeing a bike every day and wishing you had one.

Don't mean to sound all old and sensible but...

Ditch the CLio 172, they are mega quick, but torque steer makes them bad news, especially in the wet.
Buy something decent, but not as expensive, then pay off your debt and also have enough cash to buy a half decent bike - you'll have some cash from the car (unless you're up to the hilt on the never never) and also the 2K from the insurance. Then you can pick and choose what you use on a day to day basis.

You say that it took you half the time to do your commute by bike, but you are still doing 28 miles in an hour and a half! Eh?

I reckon you need either a better route to work, or need to twist the throttle back a bit harder! Even at 30mph it shouldn't take more than an hour... Rolling Eyes Where the hell do you live and where is work?

172 bhp Thumbs Up
FWD Thumbs Down

There are some dirt cheap bikes out there. You could buy and insure a CB250 or similar for about 700 quid.

All that money on a renault of all things. tss.

How about a cheap commuter style bike for work... ie cg/gs125 or something similar? Should be able to pick up one for about £400 and insurance should be pretty cheap.

You can then save some money and work out what bike you want next.
