Hi All,

Looking to fly into NY and via motorcycle make my way down to Florida where my current partner lives with a friend for their Spring Break.

Hiring bikes is a bit expensive as that will cost 2-2.5k for two weeks was thinking about buying a bike out there then selling it off to a dealer at the other end.

Even if I lose out on a few hundred squid this could be a good idea? Factoring in that insurance over there is cheap as chips and again could be cancelled when not needed only losing lets say a max £100.

Thoughts?

Also if anyone has any idea what could be visited or if anyone has toured in that area before and could suggest some places to go, already looking at going to Connecticut to get shot and visit a friend there and Atlanta aquarium for the whale shark in its tiny 500 million gallon tank.

Thanks,

Jack Thumbs Up Karma

No real suggestions but best of luck and enjoy the trip. Me and wife thought about something similar in 2012 but bike hire and flight costs were the same as a month longer touring Europe so that's what we ended up doing. Wink

You could visit the Coca Cola factory in Atlanta. If it is half as good as the Coors factory tour in Golden 2011 then it should be good.

We are actually hoping to buy bikes in LA and ride route 66 when my husband retires, then either sell them or bring them home in a container on a ship.

We went to the USA for 17 days last May/June and it cost £7.5k all in for the two of us, including bike hire (1200RT from Eaglerider), flights (£1400 BA Premium Economy using my Airmiles from business trips), hotels, food, beer, helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon and ATV rental in Moab and Ouray Shocked

The National Parks are truly stunning though and we can't wait to go back Cool

I have read that buying a bike is easy, but been told insurance or registration is difficult if you don't have a US address, might be worth checking it out.

That sounds a lot spnorm, hotels are relatively cheap as is food and the helicopter flight over Grand Canyon with Black Canyon raft ride is less than £600 for 2 people.
How much was the bike hire?

You can do it - Top Gear have done it on their US road trips although I'm not sure if they're covered by some worldwide BBC business insurance thing.

I think the more pressing problem may be if they want a Social Security Number (bit like our NI number - you won't have one if you aren't a citizen/resident).

May be worth calling a few US insurance companies and seeing what they say. You never know, it could be easy but make sure you get it in writing from somebody higher than a call centre chimp as you don't want to spend a fortune getting there to find out you can't actually insure anything.
