WHO had the Bright Idea, to make one out of BLACK plastic?!?
I mean!
WHAT colour is oil?
Right - BLACK!
So, you make the dipstick out of plastic the same colour as what its dipping........ HOW the feck are you supposed to see the level?
Especially at 6am on a dark winter morning!
Wouldn't be SO bad!
The engine's painted black too....... BUT... they made the TOP of the dip-stick a nice contrasting light GREY colour so you could find the thing!
Just not USE it!

Rant Over!

Any other annoyingly 'stupid' oversights of user friendliness any-one wishes to air, contribute or rant on about?

Nope.

Change your oil.

For now can you just wipe the dip stick very clean and judge by which bits are wet?

It doesn't matter what colour your dipstick is, or what colour your oil, you are going to struggle to see it in the dark.

Plan ahead instead and check it the day before during daylight hours maybe?

I'm amused by the fact that you hoard 125 SuperDreams*, and yet you elect to complain about the colour of dipsticks.

*Which are akin to abominations in my eyes, and for good reason: I've worked on one or two of them, and they're trash. Designed and implemented by people who have never ridden bikes, nor been near a road that was longer than, say, 100 metres.

That got me thinking Mike.

Anyway the colour of the dipstick can be changed by either chemical or paint process?
I did wonder if it would be easier to just drill a tiny hole at the oil level line on the dipstick, oil would seep into the hole and maybe give a better indication of oil levels in the dark? I'm going to try that idea as i don't want any foreign objects, chemicals fitted to the stick that may loosen into the oil.

My dipstick is made of chromed steel. You can't see the oil level very well on that either.

On the user friendly point. Why does nobody make motorcycles with enclosed chains anymore, an item that needs adjusting and lubing less frequently than the tyres need changing?

Only reason I can think of is because it doesn't look cool. Which is daft, a chain is never going to look 'cool'. It's a drive chain, not a fashion accessory.
Can't be cost reasons, a full enclosed chain guard isn't going to add that much to the manufacturing costs.

I often wonder why the accessory list for new bikes doesn't include items you'd actually want once you've been a biker for a while. Like a stainless exhaust and a fully enclosed chaincase. They can manage to put heated grips on the list, so why not these?

I took my enclosed chain guard off the CG, was FULL of water the chain had just been hanging in as it was poorly adjusted

I would have thought there was at least drainholes but i'm guessing they get blocked by chain fling off in no time

Rolling Eyes

Wouldn't be hard to make them out of white plastic at least
You can't see it very well anyway as in a film oil is pretty much transparent, the trick is to use tissue and dry it off completely then dip & dab to see where the oil comes to, or use your fingers if they're not already oily!

JUST REMEMBER! Time on a dip stick is RARELY wasted!

Yeah... its not actually MY Dipstick, its Snowie's. And its the bain of the short days around the winter Solstace innit? We have Daylight from about eight in the morning till four in the afternoon. Not much of it about if you happen to need to set out to work at half seven, and dont get back till after 5!
Frost wrote:

Not my oil... err actually... I paid for it... maybe it is!
Probably ought to; but only went in a fortnight ago. I think that the old motor may have a slight 'blow-by' issue... bain of the long-lay-up, gummed rings.
(This may provide ulterior motive for why Snowie bought me a new compression tester with all the adaptors down to motorbike sized spark-plugs for Christmas!)
It will either get better with use and un-gum, or it will conk out in a cloud of blue smoke. I'm not really fussed either way; I bought the motor in a job-lot of scrap 'spares' & wanted to open it up to pillage parts out of it for another..... (It's an old pre-81 motor, I think, that ought to have the 'full-power' cam in it amongst other useful bits.) But in one of those moments of extreme logic and mechanical compasion, thought "I'll JUST try it... see if it actually RUNS first!" bludy thing did, so it has a home until death now! (snowie likes it; it pulls rather better than the stock Super-Dream engine!)
Frost wrote:

Not really, the plastic is sort of ribbed so it doesn't run off so easy, and the bit that ctually measures between Hi & lo is barely half inch!... Think a key-ring fob LED torch might be a useful idea here....

But, its the fact that the screw cap of the dipstick is grey, on a black engine, so that you CAN find the filler/checker..... but having used such colour contrasting aid to userbility on the outside... they CHANGED the colour of the plastic on the bottom of the filler, the dipstick bit to make it harder to use! WHY! Why not just make the whole thing out of grey plastic? Or Black.... Or ....

Oh well, just an amusing niggle.

Wotcha.

Real bikes have an oil tank . . . . with a screw on filler, which can be removed in order to see the oil level . . . and also see the scavenged oil returning to the tank.

I have to say it did rather annoy me that my CG125 came with enclosed chain, and the CB500 didn't.

It's a machine intended for basically the same purpose at higher speeds. Why?

I've only been in to biking 8 years and I didn't realise until now that some bikes have a dip stick. My oldest bike was an X reg, but I did manually have to turn the lights on that.
