PostPosted: 16:09 - 14 Dec 2012    Post subject: Insurers "collecting" money. Reply with quote

Hi guys.

For whatever reason, a friend of mine took out an insurance policy on a bike and forgot to send proof of no claims bonus.

He has since posted the proof yesterday (so they wont have it yet) and has since recieved a letter saying:

"because we've not recieved your NCD, we will reduce it to zero"

"total cost of your cover will increase by £xxx.xx plus £30 administration fee".

Payment of £xxx.xx is due which will be collected on or around 18/12/2012.

My friend paid the policy in full by direct debit.

By what means do they have to "collect" the monies if no Direct Debit or the likes have been set up?

Thank you for any help. Thumbs Up

You say he paid in full by direct debit, I which case they will attempt to collect using that previous dd mandate, and if the dd has been cancelled they will add another administration charge.

If it's not paid, the policy will likely be cancelled

you say he paid by direct debit ... yes?
then you say there was no direct debit.
If he paid by direct debit then there must have been a direct debit set up at the time and unless he has cancelled it, it will still be in place

apologies on my part. It should have read:

He paid in full by "Debit Card". Embarassed

Now that he has sent away his NCD proof, do you think he will be able not to pay.

He actually sent it away today with all the info before he recieved the letter so it has already been sent. Unfortunately they dont give an email and only give a fax or post address so he posted it.

He paid it by debit card. Can they just change a single debit card payment or ask for more? I could take out another full policy for what they are asking extra.

Yeah just phone them up tell them it's on the way. You're....sorry, "your friend" is the customer and they should respect that, don't be ruled by them too much.

And for admin fees, tell them to stick the admin fee, if they contest say you will charge them for your....sorry "your friends" time. They will soon back down with that rubbish.

Thumbs Up

Gah, my mate messed up. He ended up not phoning them as he had already sent away proof of his NCD and thought that they couldn't just take his money out of his debit card account as he had paid in full.

They have managed to take £190 out of his bank account.

How is this possible for them to just help themselves to extra money?

Possibly a continuous card authority. If it's a direct debit, the direct debit guarantee will protect you if you choose to use it. If it's the continuous card authority, i'd like to know the name of this broker so i can avoid them, as the bank won't help you.

Likely he supplied them with his card details and agreed to their terms and conditions (which most people don't even attempt to read TBF) which state they can continue to use those details for adjustments during the life of the policy where they have been notified to him.

Effectively - if he's shit with his own admin then he's not really at liberty to complain about them being bang up to scratch with theirs Laughing

Yeah, think you're right on this one. Do you think he'll be able to get the money back if he's able to prove he has 2 years no claims? (he already sent this off so either they didn't recieve it, haven't opened it or have lost it.

Yes, he will. But he won't get the admin fee back I reckon

yeah, I think you're right. It's his own fault and he can deal with that. Screw losing £190 though. Laughing

I imagine that your "friend" will just forget about it again though.

What a sad, unnecessary tale. Sad

Alternatively, he could just be a good boy and send the proof of bonus and keep up his side of the contract.

Should think himself lucky his policy wasn't just cancelled

I have. He didn't send his bonus, they sent him a letter, he then got his arse in gear, didn't phone them to tell them he'd sent it and guess what, they did what they said they were going to do in the letter they sent him.

What am I missing that you're mystically seeing?

Hi guys.

The insurer has obviously opened up the NCD proof and amended the policy so apparently my pal is due a £160 refund. They took the £30 admin fee but was his own fault so not really worth the hassle of arguing it.

My pal has learned for next time, and a word of warning for you all, if your insurer says they're going to take money out of your account, it seems they can. Razz

I know this has been sorted now, but if I ever need to send proof of NCD I ask if I can email a copy of it (scan, save as PDF and off it goes). If I wasn't able to do that I would just ask them to contact the other insurance company for proof and so far I've never had a problem.

As andym said on both counts. If they give you BS about data protection....it's on the insurance data base....they have the right to check. Does sound like your mate is a bit lazy tho....once he gets what he wants....won't bother finishing off the detail until made to do so!
