So I've looked on google and here, on forum but can't find an answer.. I'm thinking of getting custom plates but I have no idea what to do after I get them... how do I register them in dvla? and more importantly, how much will they charge me? I know custom plates are roughly 15 quid but how much is it to register them in dvla?

Cheers in advance.

Are you sure you've looked online at all? Neutral

The cost to register a plate with a vehicle is £80 alone. The website here includes this in the prices: https://dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk/

Do you mean buying the same number plate just slightly different size/slogan on it?

If so, I've just got a smaller number plate (inch smaller in width and height) for less than £6 = bargain.

Edit: The website you've listed is just for the number plate itself. You can't just get any number and expect it to be legal, infact the website which is called "show plates" gives it away.

Are you talking about private registration plates?

In that case they range from £100 to thousands easy.

I'm not sure what your aim is here, you can't just make up a plate you want and then re register it to your vehicle.. can you?

£13.25 for a custom plate...

That's just to have a physical plate made, not to buy the registration. You have 3 steps:
- buying the letters for the plate (£100-£££... the expensive bit)
- registering it to the vehicle (£80)
- getting the physical plate made (£13.25 as you put it)

You're only looking at stage 3 out of 3 and ignoring the first 2.

Nope sorry. You have to buy the registration, which is the expensive part. Getting the actual plate made is the cheap bit Smile

No. Private number plates cost anywhere from £100 to thousands of pounds, you don't just make a plate and then register it.

Try www.dvlaregistrations.direct.gov.uk

You have to buy the registration... As in become the owner of what the registration says... So if you wanted PEN15 then you'd buy it so no one else can buy it.

THEN you register it to a Vehicle.
THEN you get the plate made into a physical item.

PEN15 was owned by someone living in Glenhurst ave, Bexley a few years ago!

When the owner moved he took his PEN15 (plate) with him.

I couldn't think what to write. Mental blank! Smile

By letters of the plate I'm referring to the letters that get displayed on the registration plate. Like "DX04 XXX". You have to own this set of letters (the registration) before you can register it to your vehicle.

Once you own the set of letters (registration) you can then have a registration plate made up and display it on your vehicle Smile

Right... there goes my plan... Laughing thanks for explaining this to me. One more thing though. If I was gonna keep the same number plate as I have now in terms of numbers and letters staying the same but wanted to change the border and the little text underneath, I just get the PHYSICAL plate and put it on my bike. I don't have to register it or anything do I?

Nope, that would be fine Smile

If it doesn't conform to the legal requirements an arsey copper may give you a £30 fine, but I doubt he would even notice. Go for it Smile

Instead of letters, he really means alphanumerics - letters and numbers.

I was going to buy "Bang Tidy" for my bike, but it proved a problem buying the registration.
