PostPosted: 21:22 - 29 Dec 2012    Post subject: DADS! New rider and wont buy the right gear Reply with quote

Hi everyone. My Dad has recently bought a Honda Goldwing trike. He is completely new to motorbikes so he is relying on me to teach him how to handle it and use it safe but I'm having trouble getting through to him about buying safety gear. He seems to be more bothered about how he looks on the trike than how safe he is. I've tried explaining how if you're in an accident the dangers are still going to be the same as a motorbike when you come off from a bump.

Helmets he is fine with and understands. What I am struggling with are the jackets he looks at. He went from looking at leather and sheepskin flying jackets to old leather motorbike jackets from the 80's that have no armour. It doesn't seem to be sinking in why we have armour.

I don't want to be a kill joy I just want him to take it a bit more seriously and look at new jackets that have impact armour in the elbows and shoulders for a start.

Does anyone know of any old threads or youtube videos that could help put my point across?

It gets frustrating when he argues 'I reckon 90% of bikers don't wear armour.'

Hope you guys can help! I thought the parents were supposed to nag the kids about safety Laughing

Regards Andy

Put him on here. Bikers his own age which he will see have far more experience will set him straight. I get nagged all the time by mates' wives. He may not listen to his kid, but he will listen to his peers then try and tell you lol!

Must be tough raising a father... Dads are stubborn bastards sometimes, and you can't just give them a hiding or remove priveliges he he

I have the opposite. My boy always wants to go in crocs and shorts. So I can't very well ride in shorts and slops then tell him. So I only ride with no ATGATT when he isn't around he he.

Some of the protective gear can be bought separately and worn under a leather jacket to start with.

Google motorcycle back and chest protector.

Show him the Spills thread then show him bEN_'s thread where he nearly died from a 30mph accident.

I broke my leg travelling at almost zero mph when the bike landed on me - that was a little cbf125 - imagine a trike landing on you.

Also a bit off topic but I thing your dad might be buying into an image rather than getting into biking.
Being your father I guess he is middle aged.

It could be hard to change his mind when he imagined himself on a bike looking good in the gear he wanted to wear while going out to ride with others that ride a bike like his.
Would they shun for wearing the gear.?

and a few mm of foam padding would have prevented those injuries.. lets face it, the armour in a lot of jackets etc is next to useless

The crumple zones and airbags will protect him.

I'd give it up, he's driving a lardy mobility scooter and is as much of a "biker" as Billy Connolly. He doesn't even need to wear a helmet, and if I ever end up on a trike I doubt I'd bother either.

This happened at low speed (around 30mph-ish) wearing a decent bike jacket with shoulder pads etc:

https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/xray.png

I was slowing down on a straight road, the rear started to glide out from underneath me and the bike just threw me off.

Doctors said I would've shattered the bone completely and I would've smashed my elbow into pieces had I not had proper armour.

Six months on and I play Ice-hockey regularly now. It's like the break never happened!

My post has nothing to do with armour and everything to do with what can happen at low speeds.

He's got a vehicle that combines the worst of cars and bikes - likely to topple in a corner if you go to fast and land on you.

Presumably the f-word image is the main thing to him, rather than concerns about safety, usability or image to other people not of his type.

Neutral None of this is about what he's riding. I couldn't give a shit if he was on a moped or a gsx my concerns would still be the same.

Thanks very much to those who gave the advice and the links. He'll probably see sense by the end Smile

I wish... It happened in Dublin. They x-rayed me, told me it's broken, stuck me in a sling and sent me on my way with specific instruction to make an appointment with the orthopaedics department when I got home. They gave me a CD with the x-rays on to give to my consultant, but I couldn't resist popping it into my laptop. Turns out I needed "specialist" software to see the x-rays, but a quick google found a free program that allowed me to not only view the images, but also manipulate them (OsiriX).

Thinking about it, I suppose technically it was private health care as Ireland doesn't have an NHS, but I got treated under EHIC.

It is a bit about what he's riding... It's a trike. I wouldn't wear the same gear on a trike as I would on a bike, cos I'm unlikely to fall off it in the same way.

You might not fall off the same way but a collision is still the same.

1. You don't need helmet on a trike.
2. A Goldwing trike weighs more than a mini, It's a barge Laughing

I've had 2 Goldwing trikes. Jeans and T shirt all the time it was warm enough. Stereo at full blast, brilliant.

Let your Dad enjoy himself and stop being a safety Nazi.

My last Goldwing trike

Oh you cynics. It's not got the handling of a Ducati, I admit, but it's the best pose machine I've ever owned.

It wasn't the going round corners, it was the stopping that had to be planned well in advance Laughing

He's a grown adult and older than you.

Leave it, he's perfectly capable of making his own decisions and it's his own body.

Armour is going to make a negligeable difference in a crash anyway. Far better getting something comfortable and warm.

If I had a trike. I wouldn't even wear a helmet. Actually, I don't on the bike sometimes (fuk da police).

The trick is to not fall off in the first place.

Trikes. Just say no, kids.

To the OP. Sorry to hear your dad is an idiot. He's already bought a trike, so the lack of sensible thought on the safety issue is merely symptomatic of the greater problem. Can you send him on a course for the hard of thinking?

Warmth, comfort and armour are not mutually exclusive.

It is worth sacrificing safety gear if it will actually help with this. I've ridden in shorts and t-shirt in hot countries because wearing proper gear would have made me hot, sweaty, irritable, distracted, and ultimately, more likely to crash.

I do love the feeling of riding without a lid too, but 95% of the time, when i do the mental risk analysis, its not worth it.
