I bought a new wiseco piston kit for my GAS GAS EC300. Just had a quick look at it and both the top and bottom ring appear to be identical, both with the letter 'N' stamped into them near the end gap.
I used to have an NSR 125 that i rebuild a few times and seem to remember only one of the rings had a letter on it and that would indicate that it is the top ring.

With both these rings having letters on them, does it mean they are identical? As far as i can tell, neither one has any kind of taper either which would usually give you a clue.

Do some kits just have 2 identical rings?

part number is 2835CD which i have googled and tried to get an answer but there doesnt seem to be a lot about it Confused

You want the 'N' facing upwards.

The rest... I don't know. Pretty sure you can have 2 identical rings though.

As above.

Don't you have the originals so you can compare them?
Usually they have to be put on with the gaps a certain rotation amount apart.

i dont think the originals are wiseco, i think they are wossner which may be different.

the rings locate onto the piston with pins so i cant really get the rotation of the gaps wrong.

I'm still using the bike until the small end bearing arrives in another week or so, so cant really take it apart to check, it has just confused me a bit, as i thought there was always a slight difference between a top and bottom ring. Hopefully i'm wrong though Laughing

4 strokes have a different bottom ring which is the oil ring, but 2 strokes have the mixture in the cank case instead.

I've not done rings on a stroker for some years but they always used to have 2 identical rings.

I know on the NSR i used to have, one of the rings had a taper on it, so when the fuel detonated it forced the ring outwards into the cylinder to make a better seal.

Aslong as having 2 indentical rings isnt 'wierd' then im sure it will be rate Laughing

that's confirmation enough for me then.

Out of interest, which brand of piston did you go for?.

kinda wish i had gone for the ec250, much more availability in crossover parts, cr250 piston in yours isnt it?

replacement pistons for the 300 are £130 upwards with no alternatives Confused

Genuine Honda CR250 in mine. cost 1p off ebay Laughing

To be fair if I had to buy genuine gas gas parts I would of scrapped the bike. The clutch and piston would have cost well over half what I had paid for the bike. I'm still after a replacement wheel, at some point I'm going to have to spend £200 for a new front.
