7th Jan - No1 Son crashed his FZ400 this morning in Cheltenham. A car pulled off a petrol forecourt right in front of him and he hit it broad-side. Luckily he was hard on the brakes and there isnt too much damage to the bike but still probably be a write off though as its quite old. Just the usual, "Sorry mate I didnt see you" accident.

Plod attended and dealt with everything.

Oh, almost forgot to mention, he's buggered up his shoulder, leg and thigh's where he slid up the bike tank. That'll take the wind out of his sails for a bit.

Just got home from work and took a closer look at the bike. Front forks are like a bananan and there's a fair amount of play in the bottom yoke bearing. Fairly sure the frame is bent at the bottom yoke so its definately a write off.

4th: Approaching a small roundabout, halfway round and some loser pulls out on me, leaving me to quickly try and avoid. Avoidance achieved, bike hitting the floor also achieved.

Was ever so slow and only knackered the front brake lever and front right indicator with a few scratches to the exhaust. No damage to me other than a couple of barely noticeable marks on my textiles.

Doubt my lid hit the floor at any point, but as I'm sure all others know, it's not really anything you think about at the time. Good job I already have a new lid in the post and was planning on picking up new textile suit this week anyway Razz.

Done me out of £30 for new brake lever and indicator though :/, robbing eBay bastards.

Turning off main road onto untreated side road, back end stepped out and we went sliding into the kerb. More of a controlled drop, really. minor scraping hardly worth mentioning. In fact, forget I posted this - it's nothing, honest.

On a brighter note, I can confirm that the recommended method of picking up a bike can be carried out by unfit 57-year-olds with only minor wheezing.

No, that would be sidestand down, squat down facing away from the bike, grasp handlebar and pillion handle and walk the bike upright.

I'm sure you could easily pick up 200-odd Kg of bike off a dark, wet, icy road with one hand whilst giving passers-by the finger,so don't let my post sidetrack you from your important work of taking the piss out of other people's accidents.

You can add me to the list.
Just few hours ago I had my first spill on the Versys (what a way to start a year Laughing )

Here's a scenario: I'm turning right going up a small hill, (it's already snowing but the roads were ok up until that point).

So, I'm doing myt checks, turning right, slowly letting go of the clutch (I stopped to get an extra look as the place's filled with maniacs) and the back wheel spins,
So I go back on the clutch, slow down and try to get going again (before I roll down the hill that is) and bang. I must've let the leaver go just little too fast, because I went straight down to the left. (Snow covered a lovely, road wide patch of black ice I happened to release the clutch on :/). FYI it all happened at about 5mph so I don't know whether should I class it as a spill, or just dropping the bike Thinking

Once down, I got up, get it going and got to work with no major problems.

Functional Damage: Bent handlebars and snapped clutch leaver (still enough left to be usable)... That's it Razz

Cosmetic damage: Top fairing scratches and some on the engine case. (probably won't bother fixing)

Guess that's what I get for riding in winter Laughing

Should've gotten that winter 125 when I had a hunch Razz

My comment wasn't meant as a micky take so I apologies if it came across as such.

Having dropped a bike on ice the first instinct was to pick up up, kick myself and get it going again. The skill is to calm down and remember pick it up properly without wrecking your back.

Anyone riding in these conditions deserves a thumbs up as it's damned slippy out there.

I had a very slow speed off on a patch of compacted snow last night. I made the mistake of daring to touch the brake, front end slid sideways and over I went.

Not worth pics, hard to tell which of the scratches are the new ones Very Happy

I slightly bruised my left shin.

I fell off this morning. I was going down a hill coated with a fine layer of slush, both wheels sliding about a fair bit, and then whilst turning a gentle left the back end tried overtaking the front. I throttled out of the first slide, straightened up for a bit, and then went into the second slide, unfortunately the same trick with the throttle tipped me into a mini high-side and I ended up in an ungraceful heap on the floor with the bike neatly trapping my left foot.

I disentangled myself, took a picture of the bike on its side, and then pulled it up and walked it down the rest of the hill. I tried to get going again, but the little shit wouldn't start.

https://www.team47.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/XJ-fall-down.png

So I left the bike parked up on a pavement for a bit, made a couple of calls to work to tell them I'd be late, and then called my Dad to ask for some help.

After just about giving up on getting the bike started and almost killing the battery I decided to remove the battery and walk home. Then I realized I didn't have any tools on me, and gave it one last try. The bike fired up, and I eventually arrived at work half an hour late.

Damage to the bike was minimal, I may need a new clutch lever and some paint for one of the engine covers.

#9?

Ridiculous winds out, tiles getting blown off the roof, decided it was still fine to ride to work, got about a mile and a half down the road, getting blown all over, finally get blown straight accross the lane and into a curb,

Fairly low speed, bike landed on my leg which is a bit sore but just bruised.

Only damage to bike i can see so far is paint has been worn off the crankcase cover. Limped the bike back home after someone stopped to help me get the bike up, nice chap Thumbs Up

It might be better to have a Nearly Spilled 2013 thread and show how much riding has improved now that we know SMIDSY is a 50:50 blend. Razz

Earlier this evening, I met a swarthy gentleman who thought he could sprint across traffic on a green light without taking into account the bike filtering past the van at the front of the lights.

Turns out he couldn't.

Imagine the car to my left in the pic is a big blue panel van, so neither Mr Swarthy or I knew what was coming next, lights had just changed and I was already moving up to the line as I knew by the timing of the lights they were about to change (it's my daily commute).

Oblig. paint pic:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/17713394/bcf/cuntpunt1.png

Mr S. went down like a 50kg bag of slack shit after crunching into my wheel and front fairing (pics later), did some ows and arghs, then got up and limped off at a fair lick of speed. I can only assume he didn't want to stick around and talk to me about his forthcoming whiplash claim, what with me calling him names and such. Still, I managed not to drop the bike. Which was nice.

I figure the damage is less than my excess, so no insurancing. I also figure as Mr S was happy to wander off, he didn't require the amberlamps , so no need to inform plod.

I suppose now I'll just have to wait for him to have one of his many uncles take him to hospital and start pestering the police for camera footage from the junction showing the cold-blooded hit-n-run by the evil biker.

I've got one to add to the list. Tonight in aberdeen I was coming up to a crossing the lights were green all was looking fine people were all standing at the crossing not moving and the. Suddenly a guy just walks out not looking for oncoming traffic right I front of me so I brake hard to avoid smacking right into him and the wheels lock up, the bike comes over and slides along the road with my legged trapped underneath. The worst thing was the guy didn't even check to see if I was ok he just walks off leaving trapped underneath the bike! Not much damage done to the bike just scratched up plastics.
