While going over the tyres this morning, I found a roughly fingernail-sized piece of flint embedded completely in the middle of the rear tyre. I gouged it out. It was in at an angle (not straight in), and not in a tread, but in the thick part of the rubber. The tyre is a new BT023 and has 1,000 miles on it. Pressure is fine and there doesn't seem to be any air leaking out of the now-slit (I put some soapy water on it and had no bubbles).

Is this something I should get repaired or just keep an eye on it?

I would forget about it. If it's not leaking the carcass will not have been compromised.

Thanks both of you. I'll keep an eye on it, check my tyres more frequently (might have caught this at an earlier stage) and will check out Ride On. It sounds like an interesting product.

This might really scare you, but surely it depends on how far in the stone went.

If the hole is quite deep and is approaching the point of having gone right through the tyre (no idea how you could check such a thing) then the integrity is hugely compromised because the tyre will be much weaker at that point, and will not be able to withstand the pressure anywhere near as good as any other point on the tyre.

In short - tyre will be fine but a sudden force could cause a blowout.

Consider a pane of glass with a crack in it - knocking on it does nothing but only one knock too hard and the whole thing is utterly destroyed.
Or consider a balloon with a weak spot (y'know the ones that have a funny bulbous lump on the side when you inflate them) - that weak spot is the point most likely to break because the material is thinner there.

Probably not the case for you though. Pictures would help, to see how deep the stone went.

If the carcass is cut air will leak. If the carcass is not cut it's no more risky than the number of tyres we've seen here with canvas showing.

This. I've lost count of the number of flint flakes, shards of metal and other assorted crap I've dug out of my tyres, both tubed and tubeless, over the years.

If it isn't leaking then its nothing to worry about. Thumbs Up

Fair play. I just thought that any point with less integrity would be a greater risk of blowing, or ballooning/bubbling out due to it not being able to withstand as much pressure.

The carcass is the base of integrity.

Intact carcass = same strength tyre.
