Hello!

I have had enough of my Chinese 125, and having passed my test a couple of weeks ago I think I might move on to something with a bit more gusto Very Happy

I like the look of the Honda CBF 500, and there is a 2007 model at a good price for sale near me.

Does anyone know of or have a CBF 500? or are there other bikes that are better or cheaper to ensure for a 17.5 year old?

Just an updated cb 500, which is pretty good for a commuter.

Check that it's carb'ed and not fuel injected, else you'll have fun restricting it

I bought one as a first big bike at around your age, its restricted.
All the restriction is a throttle stop i have pics if you want to see it.

I cant fault it its fun and fairly quick when you want it to be but it returns 50+ mpg on my commute as well.
If you have any questions just let me know

well it seems to be only £60 to change bikes on my insurance, so I might go for it Smile

what is the performance like on a restricted 500?

pretty gd tbh its quick up to 80 and will go to 90 fairly easy. I've taken it on motorway a few times now and it copes with that fine to

because its a throttle stop restriction you still get the full rev range just not as quick.

I think the restrictors on my 500 "fell out", but can say the performance on a 500 commuter is definitely a decent step up from a 125 Smile. As said, quick up to 80 and will then gradually build up.. I'd imagine you'd maybe just about get 105mph whilst restricted.

Depending on what you're planning on doing with moving up to bigger bikes, it might be worth looking at a couple of the ever so slightly bigger options that are good for first "big bikes" and cheap on insurance:

    1. SV650
    2. Bandit 600
    3. Hornet
    4. ER6n

Personally though I think that a 500 is a perfect size for a first big bike, although I don't know how soon you might want more "oomph" with it restricted :/[/list]

As someone said above, its an updated cb5. A neighbour had one from new and still has it. He's ran it into the ground with constant commutes and uses it all weathers. Makes my bike look brand new and those that have seen my bike will know what I mean! (I never clean the bastard)

Reliable workhorse.

Compared to your 125 you will think you have jumped on a rocket ship. Even more so if those restrictors fall out like they are so infamous for doing. Wink

I've had a couple of hours on a CBF500. From what I remember it was quite a low seat heat and had quite a torquey motor making it a more fun ride than I was expecting.

Going to have to comprehensively disagree with everyone above, CB500's are not what I would ever call 'fun'.

Dull power delivery, little ground clearance, utterly dull. I didn't ever look forward to riding mine, so it got sold quick sharp.

However,

I'd have to agree with this about a 500 commuter twin.

It's fun for the initial few months coming up from a 125 because it's like "Hey, this is fast!", but it wears off so quickly. I used to have loads of fun riding my CBR125. I enjoyed it for the full year that I owned it. I got bored of my GS500 a few months ago. Shocked

The thing that's giving me fun from it now is practising wheelies and such.

A 500 commuter twin is probably one of the bikes which works well for your restriction period, but it is so dull Neutral

I'm saving for something more exciting after Spain.

From 0 to about 40 it will outrun most cars, so it is nippy enough in town.
On an open road the performance is similar to a small car. Even with my stocky self on top of it will comfortably cruise at any speed legal in the UK. Do not expect it to accelerate from 50 to 70 uphill in 6th, though.

All I have seen of GS500s now is knackered engines.

The CBF should be more exciting than the GS... It's built to a better standard, is more reliable and pumps out about an extra 10bhp I think.. although obviously this wouldn't be noticeable until your restrictors "fall out" like they're oh so famous for doing Smile.

If you're able to afford a CBF, you can't really go wrong. Just make sure you don't pay over the odds, as you might be craving something bigger come summer Razz

I think after 12 months you will be bored of it.

It's frankly a boring commuter so uninspiring it barely can be called a motorcycle.

Look at a 600 Horent and restrict it. Perfect to keep for a few years and perfect unrestricted.

Lmao Razz, well I'm gonna start putting some cash into a savers account for a "rainy day".. which I have a funny feeling will actually be a really sunny day, and I feel like buying a new bike ;P.

Although this means sacrificing Domino's for every meal Sad
