So, one of my 'new years resolutions' is to finally learn how to play the guitar properly. I know there's a few guys on here that can play so im sure there's someone that can help!

I played the keyboard for many years when i was younger so i can read music etc but playing guitar is like, so much cooler!

So, i need a guitar...where the fuck do i start?

What do i look for, brands etc? I don't want to spend too much in case i get bored but at the same time would like something that would last a year or two...

Epiphone are good quality at reasonable prices. I have an Epiphone Les Paul that plays beautifully (unlike me).

spend £100 - 200 on an acoustic (fender, yamaha, Ibanez etc)
will last you a lot more than a year or two

other option is to by an Electric but that means buying an amp as well

What "oldpink" says, start with an accoustic, practice until it hurts then practice some more!
Once you can play the accoustic, playing an electric is so easy!

Hang on... I have an electric guitar and still don't have an amp yet.

Also, not sure I'm allowed to mention, but you can get a starter guitar from the likes of cash generator for about £60, then if you get bored with it you haven't wasted a lot of money.

Also I believe lidl have/had some acoustic guitars for about £30 (the one local to me had a couple in, but I would need to check the price....

For starting out I didn't spend a fortune... and surprise surprise... I still can't play lol (getting better though

Get an acoustic electric, ftw

Preferably not one that needs a new 9v battery after using it twice Rolling Eyes

+1 for ibanez, those guitars were ideal for me when I played a lot, nice thing necks, as many frets as you need, doesnt fall out of tune constantly, apart from that blasted G-string

As for learning, I learnt on a right handed acoustic, upside down, in school doing rubbish acoustic lessons where they taught us things like greensleeves and song of joy, oh joy!

Well work out what music you like to play, lead/rhythm etc
Chords are a good start if you're into that, I've never been a fan and been more of a lead guitar man

But as you're someone who can read and understand music you will benefit more from learning scales, and once you've learned scales you can learn to improv, but I never got that far..

I only really learned a few songs and got good at playing them, rage against the machine and black sabbath and that sort of thing, then I stopped listening metal and rock much and sort of moved away from it...now I want to learn to play piano/keyboard!

You just need to practice practice practice until it's comfortable

Also I'm not sure if I'm allowed to plug a site for learning, but I'm sure spam ratings will be duly dished out...

But one I found was https://www.justinguitar.com/index.php and that's been helpful to me

I've got an older version of this https://www.reidys.com/index.pl?submit=View_PLU&PLU=5376&utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=Feed&utm_campaign=PriceComparison&gclid=CKTh1vj2gLQCFSHHtAodrj8A7Q Can't go wrong at that price Laughing

I posted last week about getting a new guitar, some said do up the above, some mentioned some makes. Flip guided me to a youtube video looking at cheaper guitars ( £200 ish ) and I ended up going for the one that came top. https://www.espguitars.com/guitars/ltd-standard-deluxe/ec-50.html very good reviews on ultimate-guitar.com

I agree with this - it's not spam, that site is a pretty good learning tool. Thumbs Up

Electric... I would start with something along the lines of an Ibanez ART120. Superb sound and play-ability at beginner prices!

Grab a Line 6 15w amp and you'll be well into it.

If you want acoustic (I never had one, never felt the need, electric does the same + more) then a low end Fender acoustic would be more than adequate. Thumbs Up

https://a1.ec-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/117/817b9bcec3cc457f8f2ad41c98087529/l.jpg

Was cheap, know that much
also got a "Vintage" brand Les Paul

Not to be confused with vintage, which would be worth something
Heavy as fuck

Cheers for the help so far guys! Much appreciated!

Im going to start off with an acoustic. I dont have space right now for amps and such which is a major factor in my descision.

Idealy i think i want to spend less than £150, the less the better obviously but i still want the best quality i can for the price.

Yamaha guitars appear to be very consistent good quality, at reasonable price.

If you want electric, buy electric. There aren't any rules about whether you should buy electric or acoustic! A 15W bedroom amp doesn't take up any room.

Expect to pay £40 for a Chinese guitar and amp that a kid has given up on.

This is a good point, you need to learn for the right reason else you'll just waste money and have a guitar laying around people will ask if you can play only to be told "not really"

Do it for the love of music, find a good awesome piece of guitar work and learn it.

For me it was stairway to heaven, only thing I learned to fingerpluck really

Good times, wish I kept at it really, I could be really good now. I sort of reached a plateau where I didn't get any better or worse then lost interest...

The amp is about 18" x 18", it takes up no space at all, so discounting an electric on size is a non starter. Personally I enjoy playing my electric better, I also find it easier to play. Also with the electric when its plugged in its sounds so much better compared to the accoustic. Razz

No space ? No problemo !

Buy a usb guitar interface and plug your guitar into your pc. Then use Guitar Rig (or amplitube - both avilable as free or demo versions) along with a pair of headphones. The hardware/software simulates amps and effects hardware.

The whole affair should take up the same desk space as a fag packet.

I've got a Native Instruments Mobile (literally the size of a fag packet) and the slightly larger NI Session. Both are very good - but ebay can find you the equivalent for a tenner or so.

...and as above - guitars can be hung on the wall.

sorry to hi-jack, but this is relevant too.
Any recommendations on learning to play software/videos/books. 5 minutes ago, my Dad decided this is what he wants for Christmas.

Assuming that you don't want an acoustic....

£200 ish on a electric guitar. Fixed bridge if possible. (Or at least a non floating trem). Yamaha are always a safe bet.

Line 6 GX with pod farm. £80

Get Metallica tones etc from the Line 6 custom tone site. Free.

You can use guitar rig with the GX although in my opinion Guitar Rig is horrible but can be acquired from torrent sites. Free.
.
Headphones. You don't need an amp yet. There's no point being heard when you can't play. Smile

Dunlop tortex 0.88mm is my pick /plectrum of choice for guitar and bass. About £5 for a dozen on ebay.

Android tuner. DaTuner lite for when you're not next to the P.C to use the pod farm tuner. Free.

Acquire tab books in pdf from torrent sites. Free.

String winder for string changes. £4 ish?

Spare strings. (You will break some). £5

Guitar strap. £5 for a cheap one?

Metronomes can be downloaded. Free.

Scales. Chords. Online. Free.

Lots of good tips and teachers on youtube. Rob chapman (Rob Chappers). The zombie1976.

Andertons do good youtube videos for learner guitars and practice amps.

First I totally agree about the USB route, that's all I'm doing (although I have ordered a 1.3w amp (about the size of a walkie-talkie), so I don't need to switch the computer or PS3 on.... and only cost £10)

Also, I'm slightly confused, I thought acoustic guitars were thicker than electric... is it just long hooks you get to hang them up or something?

Yeah. Although I'd spend more if you can as they aren't brilliant. I still have my Squire actually. I use it to loan to mates when they want to decide if to take up playing or not. Smile

You want this. Wink
