Got a bit of money to burn, figured i could do with a new tv to replace this 32" LCD Sharp shitbox i use currently.
Dont want to blow hundreds on one, but i was after a basic 50" set.
Been looking at this:

https://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-series-4-ps51e490-hd-ready-51-plasma-3d-tv-12319310-pdt.html?srcid=369&xtor=AL-1&cmpid=aff~Skimbit~&istCompanyId=bec25c7e-cbcd-460d-81d5-a25372d2e3d7&istItemId=qqpxmxaq&istBid=t

Seems pretty good. Just wondering peoples opinions on 3D as a whole, is it worthwhile? Do many games incorporate it? As most my TV use is PS3 or Xbox with some Freeview viewing.

Thanks

I dont know about the 3d aspect i have never used it, but cinema 3d gives me a proper headache!

The main downside on that tv is the resolution, for any new tv for me it would have to be full hd (1080p), especially when its as big as 50 inch, hd ready (720p) just isnt good enough.

Done a bit of research on that and the general conclusion is down to what it will be used for, how far back you will be sitting and how good your eyesight is.
Most games are in 720p, most broadcast tv is in 1080i, only Blurays would benefit from 1080p, but i dont even own a Bluray movie at the moment.
My eyesight isnt amazing either so i doubt i would see the benefit of 1080p unless i sat unhealthily close to the screen

All the people I know who have a 3D TV have been pretty disappointed - not because of the quality, but the lack of 3D stuff out there, especially for free. You'll end up paying way more for a subscription with 3D movies/programmes on it and it will all be repeated constantly as there is so little available.

Personally, I wouldn't bother, I'd just get a really decent 'normal' TV. Samsung are decent TVs though - I used to work in Currys and I'd go for either Samsung or LG Thumbs Up

The overall clarity of a 3d tv's output is far better than all but the very best imax cinema screens. You will see details you never noticed at the cinema. Avatar 3D is still one of the very best movies to watch. Its jaw dropping effects are a true testament to what 3d can be like.

My personal preference is passive 3d tv. No flicker. Wide viewing angles. No headaches and the glasses are vey cheap. The 3d quality is excellent and far far improved from several years ago.

Active is very good but many people with good eyesight complain of being able to see the flicker caused by the shutters, hence the headaches. The glasses are expensive. Viewing angle on active is somewhat limited and there is no discernable quality improvement over passive. Yes I have had both.

I am currently using a 200hz 50" LG LED passive 3d smart TV. Purchased nowadays for about 600-700quid, cheaper if you shop online. It is by far the best TV I have owned. The 3d effects can be tweaked. Distances set to allow depth of field etc.

All in all, yes 3d is worth it. But like most things you'll not use it particularly often, other than to impress friends and family when they visit or to watch the latest marvel blockbuster.

You might not get much benefit from the 1080p right now, but in the next year or so when the new consoles come out, Id imagine they'd all be 1080p.

The other thing I noticed was the resolution is stated as 1024 x 768 which is 4:3 not 16:9, I dont know if that would cause a distorted picture or you would miss the outsides of the picture. Seen lots of tvs advertised as 1024 x 768 but assumed it was a misprint.

At least you get 2 pairs of active 3D glasses which are roughly 70 quid a pop

I wouldnt got for the 3D ones because I have a dodgy eye and it doesnt work for me, its like I see every other frame in 3d for some reason.

I have a Samsung 42" smart TV with full HD and I cant fault it. Its the LED one and the picture quality is great. Fantastic on the HD channels.

Oh. Forgot to answer your question about games. Yes more and more games allow you to play in 3d. The latest COD games do in single player too. Plus you can convert a 2d signal into 3d on most modern 3d TV's.

Thing I notice when I play games on true 3d mode is I get motion sickness. Its a surreal feeling playing in 3d mode.

As i cant really experience it myself, can you describe what a game like COD is like in 3d? Is something always happening in 3d or is it like some movies where there are 3d moments but mostly in 2d?
I'd imagine a converted signal wouldnt look all that good.

Thats true but even games in full 1080p, im wondering if the difference will be that worthwhile with my eyesight and viewing distance.
Ive read a TrustedReviews and HDTVtest review and the picture doesnt get distorted, it just slightly up/downscales depending on if you output in 720p or 1080p

Just had a read up on it, reviews don't look too good, surely if it downscales then it defeats the purpose getting an hd tv, have a look on ebay or ebuyer and Im sure you'd find something better

quick search finds this, cheap but not a big brand.
