Just a general announcement to fuck off the Hobbit, which has outraged every person I know who has seen it, and go for Life of Pi.

Made by thousands of minutely-attentive Taiwanese chappies, it's pant-stickyingly beautiful.

First film since Avatar to make use of the 3D stuff. Without spoiling it, they make excellent use of the depth of field tricks that the 3D allows.

For those worried about defiling the book... I love the book. I introduce it to any smart girlfriends, and they're usually very grateful. It was actually one of those who urged me to go see it, and asides from toning down the suffering/visceral killings and truncating long events in to one quick scene (the hyena and zebra scene is very brief, for instance), it's very true to the story. I re-read the book this week, before seeing it yesterday, so I knew any time it deviated.

There are plenty of differences, but none harm the story, and you will understand what they are driving at better in the few places where they only allude to the point.

Also, much like Avatar, one you could very happily go see on mushrooms. It would be very worth it. Just throwing that out there too.

For 20p I shan't even send the moody copies I have. They're very available on the internet.

As for being worth a read, definitely. But I'm not sure if you need to have read the book before you see the film.

I really would urge everyone to get out to see it while it's still on in 3d, just like I [and the whole rest of the world] did when Avatar was out.

But yes, the book is heart warmingly poignant.

Just yes. Thumbs Up

Saw it on Wednesday and I've been telling everyone who'll listen to go and see it.

I'm sure it'll still be good in 2D and on the small screen, but see it in 3D if you can. I'm extremely cynical about 3D because of the greed induced shite that normally gets pasted across the screen, but this one genuinely works.

A pretty movie that reminded me of Disney animated films.
Not convinced by 3d.
Bugger all story and felt slightly too long
I still enjoyed it though Smile

I read the book when it first came out, its weirdly trippy but a fantastic story. Got tickets to go and see the film tomorrow night, does it stay fairly faithful to the book? Either way it looks stunning Very Happy

Fairly faithful, only thing is Pi is a bit 'swashbuckly' at time. Not too much, but certainly more than the book.

Vin, they had to miss out plenty from the book, and did a pretty good job of it. But yeh, I guess if you didn't know the story it might seem weak.

But still, obscenely pretty.

Watch the film before the book? Usually find that is the best way to avoid disappointment personally.

I read the book quite a while ago, and loved it. I was delighted to see they were making a film. Didn't know it used CGI that much but its good to know that someone I trust (!!) rates it Laughing Thumbs Up

Aww, I feel useful. This is good news, as a 70 year old Greek man seems to want a fist fight, and I'm not sure why... his argument for hating me recently was because I was so mean as to say 'Good morning, good evening or hello' when I saw him... I'm such a bounder!

I feel I may have picked the wrong side in the Greek/Turkish war Neutral

But yes, go watch it, in 3d, and then pat me on the head later...

According to the trailers, it's a pile of pretentious wank. According to this thread, the target demographic is bang on.

It still beats an angst-ridden traipse around the world to find myself. I'd have thought the amount of time you've spent obsessing over yourself, you'd have narrowed it down to a few grid squares by now though.

If there was an OPEC equivalent for vitriol, BCF would be the sole member state, and would have the world by its bollocks. Commodities traders in virulent vapours would be clamouring for our lowest price when the markets opened each day.

Cool Thumbs Up

Make your fucking minds up. You want pith or vitriol? Only I have to put the tap on the right barrel, see.

Oooooooooooooh. How dare I suggest a film for people.

If you want the film (or at least, book) I most identify with, go watch The Rum Dairies.

Life of Pi is just lovely escapism.

I bet you think people who don't read The Sun are also pretentious Wink

I was arguing by extremes Petal. Weird that you had to turn my innocently recommending a film in to a bit of a dig.

Fuck knows why, but whatever floats your pineapple.
