Riding a 125 : Do I need to inform my insurance company (Devitts) that I've just passed my restricted license?

If I want to buy a restricted 600/700cc bike and trade in the 125 do I just cancell insurance (and take the hit) or convert?

Don't need to as said in other thread.

You can do what you want with insurance, they usually charge you for cancelling but it will probably cost a fair bit to change to a bigger cc. Some do not upgrade you from 125 > 600.

Ringing up to politely tell them you have passed your test can cost you a £25 admin fee depending on who your with, so I will leave that up to you to decide.

Your current company may upgrade your bike on your policy for a amount working on the length of policy left and the bike you wish to upgrade too. Some won't, in the latter case, depending on how long the policy has left to run, may be worth waiting a month or 2 to earn your no claims for the year if your eligible.

Open up your insurance policy document (it'll be available online if you've filed it under 'bin' without reading it).

Under General Conditions (most likely after the sections of cover)

Changes In Circumstances:
You MUST tell us of any change in circumstances which are relevant to this policy as soon as possible.

Usually there will be a list of changes which are to be considered changes. In mine, there's no particular reference to type of driving licence change - only licence being revoked. Yours may be different. Read it and make your mind up from there.

I rang Swinton to change from 125 > 600cc. It wasn't a problem to do this, but they quoted £120 per month instead of £40 per month as I had been told on price comparison websites. Long story short, as there were major hassles and misunderstandings with them (the woman on the phone had led me to believe it would be £120 for the rest of the policy, not PER MONTH), I ended up cancelling and going with someone else as it was cheaper to do so. More so when I complained about their lack of clear communication on the whole thing so much, that they refunded my cancellation fee Thumbs Up

Ring your insurance company and get a quote for the bigger bike - don't just ring up straight and say you want to switch it over. That way if they give you some ridiculous quote you can shop around, see if you can beat it, and cancel it if it works out cheaper. Listen VERY carefully to what they tell you when you ring up about it, they're a slippery bunch.

As arry says, it's a definite maybe.

I told eBike, but only because I could do it online and see that it was a £0 charge.

If I'd had to phone up somewhere, I guarantee you that I would not have bothered.

It entirely depends on the underwriter (not the broker). You won't know without calling them, some of the cheapest 125 underwriters won't cover bigger bikes.

Just be sure to say that you're calling to ask "what if" and to get a price.

Shop around first for a new quote on the big bike first so that you know the worst case scenario. As to telling them that it's restricted, well, you can do that, but they'll hear "modification" and some of them will start asking for evidence. Judge your course of action based on whether they even distinguish between "A" and "A<=25kW" licenses - most of them don't.

Given your advanced years, I'd suggest that you look into doing "accelerated access" on your own big bike to get yourself upgraded to full "A" ASAP. The DSA should assume that it's full power unless you provide evidence to the contrary, so they don't ask, you don't tell. Wink

feckers want 50 quid to cancel the policy plus 67% of the premium! This means its 92 quid to kill it - and 105 to let it run.....

But upgrading to another bike also incurs the 50 quid 'fine' plus stupid extra premium - I really do hate insurance companies

Still just been quoted 99 squid for TPFT on a 2006 700 Dullville with bennets so its not all bad!

I guess most people go for TPFT here on bikes worth less than 3.5k?
