Would you/have you loaned your bike to a mate?

Just curious. I recently lent the zeph to a mate, only for a couple of days, as he needed access to a road-legal bike in a hurry and he is someone I know and trust.

Since returning it he has come to an agreement with the OH and now has our divvy on long-term loan cos it was an easier and cheaper option than getting any of his own stuff road-worthy and road-legal for the winter.

Several other friends have raised eyebrows at this and think we are mental. I have no qualms, I know this person fairly well and know if anything happens he will "do the right thing" by us.

What's your opinion? Would you loan a bike? If so to who? Have you? What - if anything - happened?

I would, but would probably feel a bit anxious about it.

I've had a friend lend me his bike, and I binned it, that felt bad. The front brakes were shocking though (you'd need to be a grip competition champion to get them to work, stoppies impossible).

To maybe 2 of my friends yes, anyone else no. I have borrowed friends bikes and test rode some aswell. It's all good as long as both party's know if one of you bins it you have to pay for it etc.

Yes on the understanding that if they bin it, they buy or fix it. If it was completely out of their means to do either then it'd have to be someone I know is going to respect my property.

Saying that, I've bike swapped with mates quite regularly, it's pretty good fun as long as everyone's sensible

I lent my bike to a mate for the day, it went with a full tank of petrol and came back back empty, he wont be lending it again.

I've lean't most of my mate my bikes in the past.One was going touring Europe and blew his bike week before he went so he took my gpz 9 it was some time ago.

When I was in my teens my mates used to go and take my motor cross bike over the field's.They used to ask my Mum and she just used to open the garage and let them take it.

But I passed my test on a girl's bike I borrowed and I borrowed A bike from a friend when mine exploded the crank .So i have been lucky to have such good friend and hopefully I've been one aswell.

As long as they had enough to cover the expenses if they binned it/gave it the correct service whilst they were looking after it then yeah. I've let people use the bike that I hardly know (although they never went home with it).

I had a divvy 600 with a host of problems at MOT time one year and needed to take it off the road while I ordered parts and had work done to it. I was working fulltime and it was a job where if you don't turn up you don't get paid and you had to book holidays way in advance, I wasn't expecting the bike to fail as bad as it did and due to living out in the sticks at the time there was no public transport to get to work and back and no chance of me taking impromptu holidays to fix the bike.

I had an old school friend in the RAF who had an R6 that he'd left at home while he was doing radars and stuff in some corner of the country. He was kind enough to let me lend it while I got my XJ fixed up between working. It was a bit tatty when he gave it to me so I ordered some fairing fixings to replace rusty ones, gave it a good clean and polish, changed the oil and filter on it and returned it with a full tank when I took it back. He wasn't expecting anything other than a full tank when I took it back so he was made up but he'd saved me from losing my job so it was the least I could do, especially as I'd kept it for about 3 weeks.

I've been offered a bike to lend on a few occasions and I'm always really grateful for it. Obviously I'd pay if I messed up in any way and at the least the bike would be returned with a full tank.

With my bike though I can only think of 3 people who I'd let ride it. My Dad, my mate Dan who's probably my oldest friend and Ghost from this forum. Even then I'd be shouting at Ghost and my mate Dan not to do wheelies or anything but I know it would come back with a full tank and if they came off I know they'd fix it.

I think it depends a bit on how important the bike is to you. If it's one of many sat in a garage barely being used then I can see there wouldn't be an awful lot of attachment to it or importance of it running if it was crashed but if it was your only form of transport I'd be thinking long and hard about letting anyone near it.

Depends who it is...

Lent my AT to a mate who was ummimg and ahhing between a GS and an AT...he took it out for an hour, went straight home(We were working in Turkey at the time)!and bought one He is however an engineer and is very sympathetic to machinery...to the extent he cleans his bike after EVERY ride!!

The only other person I'd lend it to long term is my mate Dieter, who looks after it whilst I'm away in winter. He's been riding bikes all his life and has a garage full of 'em-currently rebuilding a Transalp for his missus. He's also a mechanic, and does little jobs on it just for fun;-)

I came home last year to find he'd balanced the carbs and done the valves, just cos he was bored one afternoon!

A mate of mine lent me his MTX 125 when I was 17, and in fact I took over the HP on it in the end....I did default on it though, so I was an ungrateful bastard then...

I'd be concerned if it was a bike that I actually wanted to keep, and that the reason for lending the bike was because the borrower's own bike had been stolen...

It does depend on the circumstances and on the bike and how precious it is/you are about it.

I would previously have said no, never but a few months ago I lent a bike out for a couple of weeks to someone while I had his here in bits to rebuild the brakes, do clutch etc etc.

I know he doesn't thrash bikes and if he'd broke it or crashed it he would have made it all good.
