sorry for the waffle folks.

ive been scouring the net for a bigger bike, having not long passed my a2 test. the cbf125 bike is my main transport. cannot wait till February/march again, when itll be warmer/drier Rolling Eyes

now alongside this im also 1/2 way through being vetted for a job Ive been offered, subject to vetting being completed without any issues. this would mean my wages jump quite a bit, but ill need a car again, as the bike gear wont go through their security processes too well. the new jobs going out of town, so no traffic as such in a car either and as its 70% mway journey 30 miles a day, itll wreck the bike tyres. currently i use normal a roads.

so essentially itll be for weekends all going well. don't want to spend too much, but being on a new cbf has spoiled me. i found a few prospective listings on ebay, for them to be called off early. looked on ebay, gumtree, biketrader, mcn for the past week eventually found a minted red 51 plate, Suzuki gsx600s with the 1/2 faring 25k miles for 1450, sort of locally.

i called the guy up, soon as i seen the advert literally posted just in 30 minutes beforehand, the wife answered, he called me back. we discussed it. i work in a call center doing tech support so i know when someones at it, he was genuine. he volunteered that the exhaust pipe bit that usually rusts has been repaired by his brother (a welder). he works shifts, and it was either new years morning, or next Saturday. so new years day it shall be, but i wont be able to collect it then, as ill have my cbf with me,but this causes a few dillemas:

does the bike sound ok priced?

does frost/ice develop @ 3oC? not heading out to the ice if its too cauld!

ill take the readies with me, but whats the best way round being screwed over because im unable to collect it there/then?

i was thinking in getting him to ride it back to mine (probably at a later date, and at my cost, though ill try for a freebie) its a 70 mile motorway round trip. there is good public transport between each, or there will be on Saturday. this also saves me from having to change my insurance straight away with two bikes, and ill need time to restrict it also, as getting caught will cost me that new job effectively. -so in terms of payment what do you all think for the delivery cost?

Depends on how much he wants rid.

Minimum? Free, as you've said.
Maximum? Train/bus journey + fuel cost + half days wages. I'd not pay more than a hundred, there are more bikes out there.

Have a look at 'man with van' companies and see if any of them are willing to do it. That's about 3 hours' labour + fuel for the van and their overheads/profit on top. Bonus points if you can get in with them. Not sure if you'll find anyone willing to drive that far out for you, though.

Drive up and view it, leave deposit. Hire a swb transit for half a day (£40ish?) and go collect on an agreed date?

Voila! Thumbs Up

Much better bikes out there for the money. Doesn't really sound like a great deal. I think it's a similar system to the bandits, where it rots at the 4-1 join. If I was going to view then collect/delivered at a later date I'd leave 10% deposit and then the rest later.

If the guy already has insurance on the vehicle, ask him if he can leave it til you get home, most full licence holders over 24 will have tpo extension, so you can take a mate on your cbf to ride it back for you. It doesn't say but if you haven't asked for delivery already it's rather presumptuous. I for one wouldn't deliver it for free, I'd probably charge you 50 quid or so.

ok ill have a think, only ridden on mway 3 times for short burst, and ive never carried pillion, the van option sounds better tbh.

i live in Glasgow, so while there might be better deals out there, most involve the journey down to birmingham/london/wales from what ive seen so far - time petrol etc, and in order to do that it has to be really worth it, but then somebody local will get it first.

When I've been looking at bikes, I've looked back home where relatives live and there seem to be quite a few around Ayr and Kilmarnock. Might not need to look so far as you are doing. Also saw few decent 600s up in Aberdeen/Perth direction. Thumbs Up

when i said in the first post that my current cbf has spoiled me, i wasn't kidding. i bought it brand spankers with 4 miles on the clock. (from perthshire mc's actually) its in v.v good condition as youd expect from a 3000 mile 12 plate bike, and aside from oiling the chain, and topping up with engine oil/petrol, washing it, ive had to do nothing else to it. i havent even had to check my tyre pressure! granted its had its 900 mile & 2500 mile services, so thats the filters etc.

all the searches Ive done have been national ones. i do see many older ones 98/older for perhaps up to £1100 of all the jap 500/600's. and i see newer ones eg 2006/newer from 2k and upwards or thereabouts. the ones i see are newer i cannot afford right now, and the ones i see of the older ones lots need some sort of work,if not right now soon and have a few battlescars, ranging from basic dings, to full scuffs. but thats me being vain/wasted with my new bike currently.

i am ironically not bothered how a car looks, presumably as all the cars ive had till now have been shit.

+1, my tyres look pumped up right now... I know they are down at least 5psi, I'm just too lazy to sort it.

I have to agree, that's not a good deal, it's just the best one that you've found available right now. There will be many more bikes on the market in Spring if you can just hang on until then.

Add in the hassle and cost of collecting it, another £50 for the restrictor washers, and factor in that it's likely furrier than a Wookie's wedding tackle underneath, and I think you can do better.

i bought a tidy 2002, 53 hornet s today with a bunch of extras on it for 1200(as advertised), 14k miles. , just got to get them restrictors.

so far its needed a battery, but once jumped started works just fine. Suspect because its not been used very often and with the cold weather its fooked. I was pleasantly surprised to find my local Honda dealer had one for £25 with a nice red Honda logo on it, fitted and cured those issues. Praying

my brother, father and i went up to perth to see it. both of whom know much more than i about bikes. I just ride the things . dad test drove it, & drove it back home. my brother and i came back in his car. (im carless currently - till i get this new job). A space was duly cleared in the annex to the garage, and and a meal bought in lieu of petrol/time. good days work methinks. Dance!

now i really need to see about selling my CBF125. Shifty

Wink

Good buy, it'll be a while before you're bored of the power or handling.

Man, so this.

Especially this time of year. It's a buyer's market.

But really - have you spent much time looking for a bike? Give it a month you'll see about 10 better prospects, I honestly reckon. Unless you've some huge thing for the gsx. But even then, maybe.
