Right so planning to go over to Europe this summer with a view for a few laps of the 'ring. With Carole Nash at the moment who state no ring insurance but I believe under eu law this means nothing for third party cover at least ? But does anyone know of any uk insurance companies that DO cover the ring?

Nope. Took 4 guys there last year. If there was insurance I'm sure they would have found and paid for it. Going again this year.. And they're gagging to go back. Regardless.

I think you'll find that the ring for non German nationals is completely uninsured... Including 3rd party. Something to do with it being classed as a private road and enclosed circuit. Something like that.

Once you pass through the gates... That's it - you enter an insurance no-mans land.

For what it's worth... The guys all said it wasn't as scary as expected. Everyone followed the rules of the road - keep right. And so on.

As for me? No... I just stand and watch the spectacle. The place is amazing even if you don't ride it. All sorts of cars and bikes from battered old Maestros to Aston -Martins. Even a family of four in an old 60s mini... As well as some very exotic bikes.

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.

It is not covered by your insurance because it will say so in the terms of insurance (mine very specifically mentions the Nürburgring as an exception). It has to be specifically excepted because the road is actually a public road (not a private, closed road). It is effectively a one-way toll road, but it is a public road and all rules of the road apply.

Your insurers will also except road racing and time trials etc, but you could argue that since it is a public road and you were obeying the local laws, you weren't racing or timing. Hence the specific Nürburgring clause.

Third party cover can not be negated, otherwise you couldn't drive there (since you need insurance cover to drive on a public road).

There's a good summary here.

My mistake. re. third party.

but.. as that page says this:

Quote:
because their contract with you excluded cover at the Nurburgring (see below), they are likely to pay out third party damages and recover these damages from you.

How much might that be? How long is a piece of string?

The end result is the same... you might as well not have it as you will end up being sued for the payout - by your insurer, anyway. good show. and thanks for the link - im sure the guys will enjoy reading it. Laughing and still be gagging to ride it regardless.

Hint - if you're going to crash, do it on your own, try not to involve a Veryon or Lamborghini or similar exotica. because - you can bet they WILL be insured and will be coming after YOU. And try not to damage the track itself either. Laughing

I have been to the ring shedloads and done hundreds of laps there, in cars however, never a bike.

FWIW, please acknowledge the risks. If you bin it or are the cause of a closure I believe Nurburgring GMBH will charge 7K euros per hour of closure not withstandiung any airlifts/breakdown wagons. You are also charged per meter of armco you wreck - I accept more relevant to cars, can't remember the costs but the triple high armco is obviously charged at 3x per meter.

I know of a UK Porsche GT3RS that got written off so not only was the insurance side of things potentially in question but he also got a 30,000 euro armco bill Shocked .

Always worth knowing the risks before you go through the barrier - as the Politzei and Nurburgring GMBH don't accept "I didn't know" as an answer, particulalrly if you are a Brit Crying or Very sad . You crash, you get a cleanup/repair bill - you have to pay.

That said, have fun, it an awesome place but be mindful of the huge variances in driving/riding standards and abilities.

Also, if your insurance doesn't specifically state the Ring but something like an unrestricted one way toll road then that will apply to that Ring as that is exactly what it is "an unrestricted one way toll road" - actually with a 50kph speed limit as well at a section called Breidscheid as you can enter for half a lap here.
