PostPosted: 21:35 - 17 Apr 2013    Post subject: Selling my bike - potential scam? Reply with quote

Hi guys,

i've got my bike up for sale, had it up for a few days (price was admittedly too high so i lowered it)

all of a sudden i had some interest. the guy asked me the bikes general condition etc, then sent me the following email:

Quote:
Hi thanks for reply, i am a marine engineer, i am at sea right now. I
am buying this for my son as a surprise gift. I can only pay through
paypal at the moment as i don't have access to my bank account online(i
dont have internet banking with it), but i have it attached to my
paypal account, and this is why i insisted on using paypal to pay,all
i will need is your paypal email address to make the payment, and if
you dont have a paypal account yet, you can set one it cant take you
less than 3mins to do that, i will be expecting your paypal email so l
can pay. I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up after
payment has been sorted, l will be waiting for your reply asap..

does this sound legit to you? i've only ever sold the bike face to face so don't quite know how it works over paypal...what are the risks?

the guy's waiting on a reply, so any help would be appreciated!

Hi,

It's a scam. If you check " PISTONHEADS " it's been done to death on there. Ignore it.

How does it work if they are offering money and will have someone pick the vehicle up?

Couldn't you just make a PayPal account and wait for his 'associate' to arrive, then expose him?
Or are they just phishing for your PayPal account?

They set up a date for pickup, they get the address and then you find your vehicle gone the day they are supposedly sending someone around most probably.

Nothing like that, they would say they need to pay their courier company via western union, send you the extra money in the same 'paypal' transaction (say 3k over your asking price) and ask you to pay it on their behalf, probably with a bit extra for your troubles. Then they'd go silent and that would be that. They wouldn't get their hands dirty actually stealing physical things, they're probably not even in the country.
The PayPal transaction (sending you money) would clearly be bogus.

Why did you even ask. It is so obviously rollox.

Lots of scams all have the same feature, ie they can not be contacted by phone.

Whereas boats rigs etc do have phones these days.

Some genuinely funny stories there. I did it for a while a couple or so years back, but got bored. Make sure you are not identifiable, some of these guys don't play nice when you piss them off Very Happy

Just had a look, what he'll do is;

-'Send' you £xxxx asking amount + £300.
-Say it was a mistake and if you'll Western Union the £300 or £250 for inconvenience to his 'agent'.
-Says Paypal won't release funds until the Western Union sends funds.

Instant 250

Had this too. bastard. got a text, emailed him to have a look. He asked a few questions, then this: I was a bit suspicious, gave him the email anyways. The he's disappeared off the surface of the earth... I'll keep my eyes open.

I confirm the receipt of your email and I am glad to know that the Bike is in good condition.

I have actually tried to get this Bike earlier but most of the ones I got either had one huge fault or the other while some have even had accidents in the past while the rest were really very exorbitant.

I am actually trying to get this Bike for my first son who will be adding a year to his age in about 2 weeks. So I think its worth paying whatever the shipping charges will be just to put a laughter on his face.

As to the price, the £1200 seems to be very reasonable. To seal this transaction in earnest, I will be very glad to make the payment asap through my PayPal account as I am currently offshore and I won't definitely be able to make it to my bank to make bank transfer to you.

As to shipping, you need not worry yourself about how the Bike will get to me in Ireland as I will contact a shipping company here who will handle that.

Do get back to me asap with your PayPal Email address and Full name so that I can remit the payment asap.

Cheers,

Richard.

It's the bizarre use of the language that seems to be the most obvious giveaway. Who talks like that?

Maybe its a direct translation from their language to ours? These free online translators are not known for being very accurate.
