Hello folks,

Got a mate ready to book his mod 1/ mod 2 in the next week or so, however the only real "training" he's had has been on a tiny little honda cg and on my virago 535 (been doing a lot of closed car park and cone work etc with him) and he's had some on road expereience on 125s.

Now, i failed my mod 1 first time due to having a bike i couldn't ride for toffee (cant recall what it was but handle bars were curved, having only ever ridden bikes with straight bars).
I'd like top avoid this for him since its a birthday present for his 21st.

I know theres been some law changes and stuff lately, but i'm not clear on what they are. so:
Can he do his mod1 and mod 2 on my Virago (he's on the insurance etc) or is this above the power/bhp/whatever limits they've imposed now. Can you even do it on your own bike?

TLDR: Can you use a 1990 Virago 535 for mod1/mod2

hmmm thats quite an interesting one, what license is he doing?

Have you seen the page about what bikes are ideal for what test? yours is not listed but might be one similar?

https://assets.dft.gov.uk/dsa-bl/dsa-motorcycle-mtv-jan13.pdf

Seems as to the Virago will be in between the license brackets - looking on CC alone but then again they look as tho they are a heavier bike so might make the bhp/weight to power?

But thats just a wild guess.

Maybe give the DSA a call - might not know shite but worth a shot

395cc+: yes
In the 25-35kW power range: yes, 38bhp =~ 28kW.
Not more than 0.2kW/kg: fuck yes

The Virago 535 is suitable as an A2 test bike, which is handy as at 21 that's the license your chum will be able to go for directly. He can then do full A 2 years later (or directly at 24).

Sure he can do it on your bike. He needs to be insured on it, although he'll only be asked to confirm that, not to show evidence. The bike must be displaying L plates front and rear (to validate his provisional entitlement to ride it).

He's not required to wear hi-vis (that's only while doing training on a public road accompanied by a ticketed DAS instructor) but I'd recommend that he does so anyway.

Pillion him in, job done. Good on you for helping him.
