i thought tents might be cheaper in the winter... seems not.

when did they get so expensive?

when i was younger you just grabbed a £30 eurohike and it was a decent tent.... maybe not technically, but i used one for like 10 years on and off and never once got wet

even in snowdonia during severe weather warnings when my mate's single skin pop up meant he jumped in my tent, and another mate with an a-frame tent had it collapse on him in the night.

Have you tried ebay?

TWO eurohike tents for £30

I've been mightily impressed with the Quechua pop up tent I bought recently. Double skinner and got totally battered by wind and rain without letting any in. Downsides are no proper porch so rain gets in when you open the door and awkward pack size.

was already watching those pair for £30... i've bought them now, figured i'd see which one suited me best, and then sell the other one on or use it to put dog crate in while away maybe.

both seem to have decent reviews from what i can see though, cant seem to find out for sure, but the tamar seems to be listed with 2000hh and 3000hh, the ryde, 1500, but has a porch with it's own groundsheet.

probably end up making use of them both. looking forward to going camping already Smile haven't been in a couple of years now, if i manage to get out more often as intended, i'll look at spending more cash on a more serious tent.

Glad to see you're starting to see the darksi light... mine, which I often go on about, does have a bit of a cover over the entrance, though not a proper porch. Enough space between the layers to keep muddy footwear, food etc.

It would be like a sail Confused I've got a Quecha two man one and it's just not suitable for a bike Very Happy It is great though.

edit; No, in a thread I found apparently G has done this - dead pictures though https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=201876 Can you re-up them?

edit 2; Found a few pics, didn't realise you could get such small pop-ups! Shocked

Sorry, need to sort my picture hosting out, but got lots else on.

The one I was using was a 80cm disc. Had it mounted on top of panniers that were over 1m wide from side to side.

dont buy cheap tents they are awful, Terra nova tents will last you a lifetime if you look after them properly, Marmot tents are the same. If you get the right tent they are a lot faster to put up and take down and tend to pack smaller. The Terra Nova tents are mostly designed for mountaineering and so are designed to be carried rather than thrown in a car, i've had one for ages and a bit like good helmets i'm never going back to a cheap one!

go up in about 40 seconds and complete as the poles clip to the outside.

Talk about knock offs. Have you read the file name?

Quite liking the look of the Vango Tempest 200 for this year's solo touring.

Looks light, and probably packs down really small, but I think you might do better for the money.

It's got a small porch area and no nodes.

After my experiences I wouldn't even consider anything that wasn't at least semi-geodesic.

I used either the very same or a very similar Vango 2 man tent while touring Europe for 4 weeks with a friend. Kept us dry in a few downpours, small enough to pitch in very tight areas, and a doddle to stick it up and take it down.

Complaints would be lack of height in the tent, porch is too small to stick your boots on in. But there was just about enough space for 2 panniers, 2 helmets and 2 pairs of boots if the panniers were stacked on top of one another.

Also on the look out for a roomy tent for one person, but packs down small, my Tesco special 2 man tent is roomy, but is huge once packed.

I bought this recently and tried it out Sunday night. It's certainly big enough for one with bike gear and the pack size is really small.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coleman-Cobra-Person-Backpacking-Tent/dp/B0047T69S2

It would be ok for two with a car but two with bike gear would be too cramped for me. It's do able but wouldn't be very comfortable. Also there's not a lot of head room. Again it's adequate but more would be better. I didn't get a chance to test the waterproofing that night as it didn't rain. Snow in the morning and -2 don't count. Very Happy It has decent specs though and good reviews are available online.

Bottom line is the tent has a lot going for it and I like the tent a lot. It's a perfectly adequate solo tent despite the low headroom.

However...The coleman Cobra 3 man https://www.amazon.co.uk/Coleman-Cobra-Three-Person-Backpacking/dp/B0047T69SC is only £5 more and has better headroom. It would be great for two with bike gear AND luxury as a solo tent. The pack sizes and weight of these tents are so minimal the 3 would be the better option in my mind even for solo use.

I'll happily sell my Cobra 2 and buy a Cobra 3.

I also tested my latest sleeping bag the other night which got cold...https://www.amazon.co.uk/Snugpak-The-Sleeping-Bag-season/dp/B001I6EGHS/ref=sr_1_4?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1358366962&sr=1-4

Mines is in Olive green bought off ebay but its the same bag. Rather confusingly the model is called ''the sleeping bag'' by Snugpak.

It's very comfortable and packs up small in the stuff sack. Claims to be good to -2 and extreme range is -7. I was comfortable wearing socks, tshirt and jogging trousers at around +1/+2 degrees. I woke up cold at 7am with snow outside the tent around -2 degrees.

I'd say comfortable to +2 and extreme at 0 degrees. Obviously that's all subjective. I consider the bag good quality/good performer for the price. Thumbs Up

The Snugpak Navigator is the same bag but the old style envelope/rectangle shape which some folks might prefer over ''the sleeping bag'' which is mummy style.

Have a Vango Banshee. Best tent I have owned. Lack of porch is frustrating (more so when I travel on motorbike I imagine). Cost me £60 though so not complaining. Smile

Get a cheapie 'tarp' and fix it from your bike to the ground near the door of your tent (bike leaning away, obviously) and you have a simple porch. Not as secure but at least it is dry. Smile
