Hi all,

My bike insurance ran out on the 10th so obviously I've been using my car. I'm having trouble with new insurance due to an NCB issue;

I was knocked off in Nov 2012 when a guy turned right into the side of me, i fell off, bike slid into side of his car (not much damage to either really, just my fairing and his door sill). It was his fault, but my NCB has been suspended until claim settled, fair enough.

Except now, I need to re-insure and I'm not paying for it as a 0 NCB and then getting refunded. Its still taxed, so I believe it needs to be made SORN. But how many days do I have before I need to declare it?

Insurance finished Jan 10th. I can't speak to claims handler until Jan 14th.

Do I need to declare SORN now, or do I get 5 days grace e.t.c.?

It'd be a complete ballache to have to SORN and then re-tax on Monday lol.

Advice much appreciated. Big Dan

I wouldn't worry about five days. I forgot to SORN my TZR for about 8 months. Got a letter saying they might fine me, but nothing happened.

Pretty sure if the bailiffs came round as you refused to pay the fine you would be able to sort them out by the looks of you.

So no need to worry....

Just sorn it online, doesn't take long and you can go to the PO and grab your tax when you're ready to go back on the road.

You should have at least a month before the first nastygram. I had 2 bikes neither insured nor SORNed for 6 months, got loads of "Now you owe us £100 a bike" nastygrams, eventually SORNed them, that was the last I hear.

They can't get too fussy or it'll come out that it's impossible to stay within the letter of the law. The moment that a vehicle changes keeper the SORN lapses, but you can't SORN it until you know that you're registered as the new keeper. So there's always a few days where you're a filthy criminal.
