Hi all!
I have recently purchased a 1990 vfr 400 nc30, took it out for the first ride today and all was awesome for about an hour... then as i was ringing up my road to put her away for the night, it started running really rough idle dropped from 1800 to about 1000, and wouldnt accelerate at all was real doggy when throttle was opened.. was able to crawl it bk to my house which is where it has stayed. I let it stand for a while and started it back up to see if problem was still there and it was the same..

What could of caused it to start running rough all of a sudden? it almost sounds like a plug has popped out and lost power.. i cant tell by listening to the engine how many cylinders are firing, im only new to having a bigger big i was on a dtr 125 for a few years..

really struggling to think what could have caused the sudden loss of power.. minuets before this it was riding fine revving up in each gear smoothly and going like the clappers lol i just want it to be like that again!

Any help would be greatly appreciated Smile thanks for looking and sorry for the essay lol

cheers Dan

Sounds like fuel to me. Even if there's some in the tank it might be old / contain water / other filth.
The next possibility is usually the reg/rec on VFR's. If it runs fine after the battery has been charged i'd say that was your problem.
The tone deaf can get an idea of how many cylinders a bike is running on by starting it from cold and feeling the exhausts. If you're scared to touch them cause you like having skin, you can spit on them.

First things first check fuel line, breather hose and vacuum hose for kinks, splits, holes and perished areas. Replace to rule these cheap and easy fixes out first. Next reg / rec and test electrical system.

Shine a torch into your fuel tank, it could be crap blocking the bottom of the fuel filter.

Filling up and keeping the bike topped up with fuel is a work around until you can take your tank off and clean it.

Hi Dan,

this isn't meant to sound insulting, but I take it you've tried turning the fuel tap onto reserve?

Only ask as the fuel tank on the VFR won't be massive, and if it wasn't full to the brim, and you've been riding for an hour or so, you may simply have run out of fuel for the main tap.

Apologies if you've already tried this, but sometimes the most simple things get overlooked.

Rick
