That's a great pic.
[edit] I can't see how a video of a R1 on ice could be rated as boring.

From what I remember, tyres with metal studs are legal (as are snow chains) unless used in inappropriate conditions.
Most times I've seen conditions that would warrant studded tyres/snow chains it has cleared up later in the day, meaning you'd be driving illegally on the way home as the conditions would no longer be appropriate for them.
I am not sure about winter motorcycle tyres, but I have heard and read plenty of anecdotal evidence that having winter tyres fitted to a car make a huge difference in adverse winter conditions, however, as said, the conditions are so rare and most people don't drive in them anyway it's not worth the expenditure of buying them and getting them fitted.
Motorcycle tyres, do they sell tyres with high enough speed ratings for "fast" motorcycles that also work as winter tyres? All the ones I've seen are speed index P (~90mph) and below.

Studs are for wimps. I rode to work yesterday, carpark had a huge puddle I had to ride through.
Puddle turned out not to be a puddle but a sheet of ice. I won. ____________________ illuminateTHEmind wrote: I am just more evolved than most of you guys... this allows me to pick of things quickly which would have normally taken the common man years to master

One of the German magazines tested Winter tyres and they were shown to be much more effective than regular or even combination tyres.
Winter tyres are useful in the UK for up to 4 months of the year.
Never seen any motorcycle ones, and not in sportsbike sizes.
Speed rating isn't important. You're not going to be doing more than 90mph in the winter ____________________ Motorcycle headlight bulbs and HIDs

Not new.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM8wwWR73m0
I got some smaller screw-in metal studs for an old set of tyres on my KTM690.
Not cheap and ideally I needed more, but did the job very nicely - back to being able to do wheelies on compacted snow, so plenty of grip.
Winter hasn't been nearly as bad recently - we shall see over the next few days, but not the extended cold we had before. |
