Saw this on fleabay, and thought it looked interesting.

https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_20130706_151334.jpg

As my Kawasaki GPX750 still hasn't been put back together, I popped a low bid on of £200. Bugger me, but I won. Just picked it up today, and it's a lot better than I first thought. Apparently, it was running before the guy parked it up, 17 years ago!!!. It's only had two owners, and done 24k.

A quick wash, and some de-greaser later:

https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_20130706_154029.jpg

    So, it needs:
    a battery
    exhausts - believe it or not, I saw one on eBay last night, and picked it up for £80, new
    new tires
    brakes cleaning etc.
    oil & plug service
    indicator bracket
    new seat
    and a bloody good clean/re-spray

Just stuck a battery on it, and most of the electrics seem to work Shocked

This thing must have seemed like the starship enterprise when it came out, it's even fairly clever for these days.

I had a friend who I met whilst out riding in about 1984 riding one of those. He had been just round every bike shop in East London and then Essex trying to sell it, they wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

This was the bike that nearly finished Honda off as a manufacturer of reliable bikes and caused them to go all out and design the VFR750 tp prove a point. If yours is still running it must have had the cam chain tensioner sorted out though.

Yep, I've been doing some reading up on them. Hopefully you're right about the cams, suppose I'll find out soon enough.

I do like owning a bit of history though, they were the very first water cooled V4s, and the kit on them was absolutely top spec. There's a security lock that goes around the wheel and plugs into the bike which has a light fibre running through it, so if it's cut the alarm goes off.

Quite looking forward to getting it running, it was supposed to be able to give the litre bikes a run for their money.

Amazing what a bit of elbow grease and Autosol can do, from this;

A factory custom with a far superior V4 engine to a V-twin. A sorted V4 Honda would make the custom experience much nicer in my opinion. Id Stant on it to get to a Kawasaki Eliminator though! Smile

A lot of spit, polish, and a small amount of paint, and it's starting to look half decent;
https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_20130708_115713.jpg

Mudguard, air filter covers, and the rad covers have come up rather well.

I should get the battery, plugs, and filters this week, so hopefully will be seeing if she runs Question

The downpipes and collector box arrived today, bit of a bugger fitting them. But, loosely fitted they look good;

the last couple of days have been both eventful, and disappointing.

The parts fiche arrived today, so I can actually order parts without guessing whether they're the right ones or not.

Did an oil change, and filtered the old oil. Clean as a whistle, result. I was half expecting to find some metal in there.

Managed to finally track down the indicator problem, three of them have corroded bulb fittings so no power is getting to them Crying or Very sad So I've ordered a set from fleabay.

Also looked at the main electrics, and it seems that one of the coils is fubar'd. Luckily, fleabay came to the rescue again and I managed to get a pair for £30.

I bled the clutch, and the brakes, so now the levers actually have some resistance, rather than just flapping around.

I also sealed the tank with Petseal, now have to leave it for a week before trying it out. That stuff is messy, managed to spill some on the tank, so that will now need to be re-sprayed, again.

I do hope this runs well and for a long time after you've spent all this money and time on it.

Theres a reason these seem to rarely sell on ebay, even clean ones....

So do I Very Happy I've not spent that much on it to be honest, around a week and about £400 including the bike. If I end up spending less than £1k I'll be happy, but I'd be hoping to get it pretty much like new for that much spondoolies.

Well, finally got the exhausts on properly today, took me nearly 4 hours all in all. I really hope I don't have to take them off for any reason in the near future, a right bugger of a job.

Further good news is that after an over night soak in Plusgas, the front brakes seem to be doing their job, result!

So,
    electrics - Check (apart from the indicators)
    Brakes - Check
    Exhaust - Check
    Oil change - Check
    Fuel tank sealed - Check

So far so good Very Happy

Still to do/look at
    fit new coils
    replace HT leads - discontinued, so going to try and make my own
    replace throttle cables
    replace choke cable
    check clutch

OK, busy week.
    Coils - now replaced
    HT Leads - only one was a bit dicky, so made up a new one & replaced that
    Throttle cables - only need a bit of lubricant and some exercise
    Choke cable - now replaced

Also replaced the air filters whilst I was at it.

Next job is to check the valves, so despite me being a bit of a Muppet and not realizing they were hex bolts, eventually cover off:

Mmm, look nice an clean and oily Very Happy . The bottom one is a bit of a bugger, as I have to take the radiator off first Sad So that will have to wait until I've had a fortifying coffee.

All done & tested. Cams looked clean, and oil supply was good. Also tested the compression and looking good. The bad news is that when I put some fuel in the tank, it started leaking, bugger Evil or Very Mad Can't be arsed faffing around with more Petseal, so now off looking for a replacement. So close...

If you decide to fanny about with some more petseal I've got a kit that I'll sell you cheaper than shop does? Bought it a while back and decided that with a dent and the need to seal it (and the commonness of tanks for my bike) I wouldn't use it.

Bike does look awesome though, never heard of the VF750 before

Thanks for the offer, but I've managed to source a half decent tank. This was the fore-runner of the VFR, the very first Japanese V4. As there's only 18 left on the road, I'm not surprised you haven't heard of it before.

While the covers were off, I thought I'd give them a quick clean and spray;

https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_DSC_0005.jpg

Then back on with them, and pop the radiator back. I also gave the radiator covers a bit of a going over;

https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_DSC_RAD__Clean_2.jpg

Hopefully the replacement tank should arrive today/tomorrow so I can try to start her up again on Saturday.

I also invested in a set of these;

My mate reckons he can do it by ear, but just in case...

Err.... I'd say 'looking better'... definitely a lot 'better'.

I dont think a Sabre could EVER look 'good' Wink

It was sort of Honda, deciding to build a space age Harley... it's just, its' just, just.... well.... they just didn't quite understand the concept of 'Classic Simplicity'...

It was sort of, "Hah! Ha-lee! Weee cin do dah bettah! V-Tvin? Weh do Vee-Foh! Puch-hrods? Pah! O-hed-Camz whe' it a'h't bruzza! LOWTZ Oh-Hed-Ca-amz!.... Cwhome? Yez... Loz Cwhome. Much Cwhome... we do Cwhome on PAZTIK! It no wust, see?"

How could you be so cruel Tef, and how can you say this isn't beautiful:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/7/73/Honda_VF750.JPG/800px-Honda_VF750.JPG
But, you're right about Honda just showing off Crying or Very sad I mean, who the hell needs self-cancelling indicators? Especially when the sensor is at the front of the bike in just the right place to get covered in crap and rust to hell Evil or Very Mad

Tef wrote:

Sure you're not thinking of the Magna?
https://cars-database.com/data_images/gallery/01/honda-vf-750-c-magna/honda-vf-750-c-magna-02.jpg
Now that is a bit chromey. The only chrome on the Sabre is on the exhaust, front mudguard, and some of the bolts.

Been doing a bit of digging over the last few days on the electrics. Despite having swapped the coils, one of them is still getting hot, and not delivering a spark to the plugs. After an enormous amount of help from the Workshop, I think it's either the spark unit or the ECU Crying or Very sad A quick search on Fleabay showed them both rare and bloody expensive Evil or Very Mad So I got in touch with a breaker I've used before and got 2 ignitors (better safe than sorry) and an ECU for £75 including postage Very Happy So now it's a wait until they arrive next week. Well at least all the wiring and connectors are now nice and clean.

It felt a bit like Christmas yesterday, lots of deliveries Very Happy As well as some extra tools, and the carb balancing kit, temporary fuel tank the replacement tank and decals turned up, and the tank really is spanking, no rust at all inside or out:

https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/normal_2013-07-26_16_32_48.jpg

Just need to respray the tank black now. A couple of the decals are a bit faded, so I thought I might respray them gold, then hand paint the black back on. Anyone got any suggestions as to what type of paint for the black? The big Honda ones are metal, so I can use enamel paint on them, but I'm not sure what to use on the plastic ones.

Bugger:
https://gallery.dogfriendlysuffolk.com/albums/userpics/10001/DSC_0018.jpg
After 5 coats of lacquer Evil or Very Mad Don't whether it was because it was too cold, or I mistakenly used normal lacquer instead of the petrol resistant and it reacted somehow.

Now I'll have to sand it back and start again Crying or Very sad
