spark plug / ignition problems

Hey All! I am at my wit's end, and someone recommended coming to this forum to hopefully get some advice.

Recently, my 1989 CBR 600 F1 has been misfiring. I have owned it since new (16k miles on it).

Occasionally it sounds like one (or more) of the cylinders are not firing. It makes the bike sound like a twin and has much less power for a few seconds then it after a few seconds and then it kicks in, sounds normal and the HP comes back.

When this happens, I can sometimes smell unburnt fuel.

It doesn't happen all the time, and some days not at all.

I've personally never seen a plug "periodically" foul, or what would cause it. I changed the plugs anyway, but that didn't help.

Any insight would be appreciated.
