Does anybody listen to music while on the road? My ER6 should be here this afternoon (After original delivery date of last wednesday...) and I'm going from here (Nottingham) to Leeds for the weekend. Would an ipod be a bad idea in traffic? The only person I've heard talk about it was a lad telling me that he couldn't here a thing on his scooter, although I don't tend to have the volume turned up very high.

Yes.

I ride daily with music. Using those in-ear plugs are great, they pretty much cancel out all high pitched wind whistling which is greeeat on long journeys!

Many people think these things cancel all sound, they don't. I can still hear the engine revs, emergency sirens and other car engines.

Give it a go, you might hate it, but ear plugs should be the minimum to lessen the risk of tinnitus over the years.

I listen to music only on long motorway/A route trips. I have the Sena SHM10, a bluetooth intercom/headset, so it's easy to start/stop the music and turn the volume up and down. I've tried listening when commuting in London, but found it too distracting. The stop and go made it difficult to find a good volume, as well. Even on the motorway, I find myself shutting the music off when approaching queues. I like silence when filtering. It's entertaining enough!

Yes, got my phone on shuffle and get a random sound selection.

As SnooSnoo says, the in-ear bud type of earplug ones are great (IMHO) as they block out the wind noise, but allow you to hear the engine, and surrounding sounds (as long as you are not turned up to ear bleeding volumes)

One thing I will warn you about though is the obvious one of playing loud, rock, fast paced music as no matter what anyone says, this does encourage you (subconciously) to twist a little more throttle and nudge that needle up another couple of notches.

But that's the music I like!
Think I'll give it a go. The only earphones I have are the standard Apple in-ear ones, can always pull over if they're not fit for the job.
Gonna have to dig out ye olde ipod shuffle though, as my current ipod and iphone are both touch screen only...

I don't even like Apple, honest, I just happen to have two products. Three.

Yes, but annoyingly there are about 10 tracks on my ipod that come on and are really annoying and waaaay too loud... guaranteed at least 3 of them play when I ride. The problem is I forget about them when I stop riding and keep having the same nightmare.

I also don't know what the hell they are called to find and delete them.

To work and back, no, but longer journeys I do tend to.

It gets really annoying when someone is trying to call you though (If you're using your phone)

Yes, with noise cancelling Denon earphones too on my Central London commute.

It also has inline play/pause, skip track and rewind track as well as mic. So I can skip tracks that I'm not in the mood for, and shout to talk if someone calles (works below 30mph or wind too noisy).

It makes me more alert on the road as I'm always on the lookout more as it's my reliant sense.

Noise Cancelling Headphones are the way to go. I don't think I've ever come into a situation where my hearing would've helped me avoid a hazard. The sound of the engine is just annoying to me.

The best setup I've found it to use normal ear plugs and have helmet speakers running from my iPod or phone. I also use a FIIO Fujiyama amplifier to give the speakers a touch more oomph.

Previously I spent around £130 on some Proguard earphones (where they take moulds of the inside of your ears and make custom fitting ear plugs for the earphones to sit inside. They were utter shit and their after-sales was disgracefully non-existent, so don't even contemplate those.

I don't think I'll want noise cancelling ones, I don't like it in the car when I can't hear what's going on around me so it'd be even worse on a bike!

Hopefully the Apple ones will be fine, there's a volume adjustment on the wire too so that could be helpful.

For longer rides I use some in-ear earphones with an iPod.
I put the iPod on shuffle so I have no control over the music, it's either on or off Thumbs Up

Problem I have is keeping the earphones in when putting my lid on, even the smaller earphones seem to get dragged out by the padding Crying or Very sad

Does anywhere sell headphones that sort of wrap around your ear, like the Xbox wireless headset? That's what the training school radios use and it seemed to work, despite being uncomfortable after a few hours.

Any in-ear buds + £3.40 of silicone putty.

Put the buds in your ear and then slap some putty on top to fill the gaps. Hold in place until it sets, job done.

There will be enough putty left over to mould a set of dumb plugs as well.

I listen to music on my commute, it's straight down the M4 into London and pretty boring.

I bought these in-ear headphones for £10 delivered, excellent reviews there and I've had them around 6 months now and can't fault them at all.

I don't listen to music on the bike, I would find it heavily distracting. Others do of course, but I prefer earplugs and concentrating on what I am doing. Silicone putty and a cheap earphone seems like a good way of doing it if you were inclined to listen to it.

However... I also don't listen to it in the car, or at home, or anywhere at all if I have the choice.

I find music highly irritating and haven't listened to it intentionally for ages.

I do sometimes...I have to restrict myself on music though...Anything too bassy and I end up driving like a tit within 10 mins. I also tend to forget to look 'normal' at traffic lights and normally continue with my one man rave to the amusement of everyone else in the traffic queue.

I always ride with music.

The only tip I can give you is that when you take your helmet off, be careful not to let the headphones get caught in the chinstrap. I tore the wire in 'twain once doing that!

I often sing along to Stacey's Mum as I'm cruising through Knightsbridge. And that's not even the weirdest thing I do. If anybody sees a guy on a black GPZ doing really strange stuff in London...that's me.

Hell I'm going for a ride right now I think. Might buy some nice warm textile trousers.
