Semi mobile internet?

Hi

Moving house today.

My current flat is right next to the telephone exchange so it is fast.

My new place is miles away and you get 20kb on a good day.

No fibre yet. But there is a phone mast about 30 metres away.

What sort of mobe internet can I get through that then? That won't cost me the earth? I use about 13-15GB a month.

do you get 4G? if so i dont know why you are asking, even then just hunt around for a 3g package, but it wont be as fast as your peak of 20mb (narrow band was 56kb so presuming when you said 20kb)

Oh I can get ADSL at the new place. But its 4ish miles from the phone exchange which means uber slow.



Gifgaff.... wonder what their fair use policy is though!

As said, £12 (unlimited net) Giffgaff package but you can't tether on that one and there's been a fair few people booted off the network when they've been caught doing so.

I get about 3 mb download speeds on giffgaff when on 3G.

If you can get 3 network through that mast then the MiFi is good. Speeds over 10mb reliably but only 15gb allowance. I also use an iPhone on the 3 one plan and that's unlimited data with tethering. It's not as fast as the mifi, at around 6/7mb because it doesn't feature the high speed download protocol of the mifi but no limit or fair usage policy.

Both are fine for gaming, streaming and downloading big files.

4 miles is nothing, i live 3 miles from a basic exchange that deals with around 200 homes and then 15 miles from the next closest main exchange, i get 5mb along with the rest of the village, which is plenty fast enough for most things. i dont know what uber slow is. and still very much doubt your 20kb too, was that a typo, if not i would be having bt take a look at is going on there.

what is you ping time from google.co.uk. mine is 47ms, this should give you an idea of a tre speed of your net connection. you can also go to speed test.net

It would be worth checking further if the house line is really that bad.
We're a good 4 miles from exchange but usually get well over 5mb.
It depends on the line - how many junctions and repairs between you and the exchange though.

I would think if you can get it up to even 0.5mb it could be a close run thing with the mobile dongle.

Exchange distance is very hard to guess at. This is because the route the cables take often isn't direct. Something the route will go to a cabinet further away, something it will bounce through other cabinets before going to the exchange.

Generally ADSL speed depends on your distance from the exchange. FTTC speed depends on your distance from the cab. So it's possible that some places get faster ADSL than they do FTTC

If you want to go the mobile route then Three do a sim-only 'One Plan' 30 day rolling contract, unlimited data and tethering included £25pcm. Stick the sim in an android phone, put it on charge and run wireless AP on it and hook your devices to that. You can drop the contract at a month's notice.

If you need a stop gap internet option I use a t mobile dongle they are fairly good, they do have a fair use limit depending on how much you top up.

I bought a e3131 dongle with 3 months free internet and it is pretty good it is a 21.6mbps dongle but average is about 2-3mbps even after you reach the fair use limit (1gb per month) you can still browse and download smaller files but getting bigger files and video involves pausing downloads and disconnect/reconnecting to get full speed back.

I have used two now the first I managed to use about 75GB in the three months the second i have used 61gb so far after about 2 months.

Upload speed is poor though so that could be an issue.

I connected the dongle up to my old router to share the internet access around the house, What you do is create a network bridge between the dongle and an usused ethernet port and run a cable into the input of a ethernet/cable type router, once you have set a password on the routers network you are golden job done.

All the pc's connected can access the dongles ip page to connect/disconnect if need be (any one pc can disconnect all the others, leads to fun and games when the kids get naughty) "pack it in or i am turning the internet off"

The host pc needs to be powered up all the time for the router to be usefull, if you have a file server or folding machine that you can set this up to you are set, another option would be to buy a dedicated 3g router

or a raspberry pi to act as the host if you dont want to have a pc powered up 24/7.

I have been toying with the idea of getting a fresh sim (using iphone 12 months free offer) and bridging both dongles to see if i get a speed increase.

I have ordered a couple of usb to ethernet adapters today I am going to see if I can connect the dongle directly to the router with one of them to cut out the middle man, They are only 99p each so if it doesn't work no biggy.

FTTC is delivered from the cab to your house using VDSL.

It can be much quicker than ADSL but doesn't degrade nearly as gracefully. You can see that if you lived 400meters away from a cab, and 400 meters from an exchange you'd be better off getting ADSL.

I just find it funny when someone upgrades their broadband to FTTC expecting to get 80meg speeds but end up getting slower than before
