Quick questions

Bike is currently in with a warranty issue, going to collect a courtesy bike now, yamaha YZF r125. Just gave them a call and it apparently has L plates on. I hold a full licence, can I legally ride with L plates, is that all legitimate etc? I'm still in accordance of licence or what have you?

Yes - fine.

Stick some black electrical tape over them to form an X over the L if they won't remove them.

By defacing them, they're no longer legally L plates. And you have a full license, so no problem.

If you are concerned about it, why not just take them off yourself and put them back on before they pick the bike up?

Realistically you will be fine riding with the L plates on.

as above the wording is 'should' remove them not 'must'

however i'd just put a bit of black tape over them, pretty common practice and did it after I passed my test for my ride back to the school

Its a "SHOULD" not a "MUST" remove in the highway code, so no offence.

I'm allowed to keep the L (highway code) between lessons (eg car) and quite often use the Mway a few junctions up and down, never been pulled (kiss of death there then ) in 12 years.

Personally I would tape it over, traffic bods ain't that daft around here they'll know.

Remember for the provisional holder, the L is to alert or help others, it says something like "alter their driving prepare to give extra time" so taping it over satisfies that part as you're a full holder and are sticking to the code.

popped into Bedford police station on the way to get the bike to ask. after a mini consultation with a few officers they said its no issue and definitely not something I'll have to worry about. lovely folks in there too.

one thing I don't quite get is why they take your details for just going in to ask a question etc, not going to kick up a fuss I don't mind, its just rather odd

Well I decided in the end to just take them off myself. Took the back one off, and ripped the tatty front sticker one off, it was going to blow off in the wind anyway...
