So as there has been snow/ice etc.

When can you tell that it is safe to ride?

I have just passed my test so don't want to go out before I should. Live in London and take mainly dual carriage ways to work. Been driving my car in and most parts of my commute are all clear, just the odd back road that is still a slide waiting to happen.

No forecast for snow in the next week and apaz temps are going up from Friday.

I originally wanted to bike in tomorrow but not so sure.

Pretty tempted to go buy some gritting salt and grit the roads I use myself.

Any thoughts on how long after snow has fallen to leave it?

Just go ride!

I absolutely love riding in the snow (I ride a bandit 600) and I reckon you can learn a lot from doing so.
Just get out there and try it, no need to wait for the sun to come out before you can get back on your bike!

I also live in London and commute from Putney to Greenford every day, roads are fine, gritters are doing their job, some small side roads are a still slippy so just think a few steps ahead and dont brake or turn sharply.

I wouldn't recommend going out in the snow unless you NEED to get somewhere, it isn't really worth risking damaging you or your bike just for the sake of a little ride. Just my opinion Smile

I find the main roads are generally fine. Side roads are kinda bad, both feet down, you should be okay.

The worst thing I find is the roundabouts really. I almost lost the backend twice on them this morning.

Also you have to be very cautious of car drivers. Many of them don't seem to appreciate how difficult/dangerous riding a bike in these conditions are. I had someone overtake me this morning within 1ft whilst I was doing 20 in a 30 after my backend started twitching on a straight.

Just as you reckon; soon as you're man enough to risk it.

Winter roads aren't just difficult due to rain, snow or ice.
When gritted the result is a slimy coating over the surface which makes riding as difficult as ice.
Even when sun dries off the water there can be a flim/crust of salt left behind that can be slippery (like talcum).

For super safety, wait until there's been a bit of rain to wash the salt off the roads.

You can however fuck ^^^ and batter on regardless of course. Smile

Just be carefull.

You'll be fine, just try not to lean too much, or brake or accelerate too hard.
