Almost time for my bike's service and MOT and the first one I have had to do. No experience with what it should cost, so maybe someone can advise me.

2009 FZ6 with just over 6000 miles. Quoted £214 inc VAT and £30 for the MOT. Is that a lot for a 6000 mile service? They did offer a courtesy bike, but I'm not sure if it's really 'courtesy' of they'd want more money!

It's from the stealers I bought the bike at, I'm thinking I should shop around before committing.

What is in the 6000 mile service?

Oil + filter and air filter are DIY jobs.

Coolant change is also DIY.

What do they think is required at 6k?

Don't get the MoT done at a place that does servicing work.

Most 6k mile services are just an oil+filter change. £40-60 in parts and it'll take you about an hour first time out.

So no valve clearances or anything like that? I don't think it's anything too complicated and I could probably do it myself or with the help of people I know.

Shouldn't be, my TDM's first valve check was after 24k.

Grab yourself a Haynes Manual if you haven't already. It's mildly expensive at £15-20ish, but it will save you a lot of money and teach you a fair amount if you're new to it all.

Notably for your question, it will list service intervals and what needs doing at each interval, along with instructions of how to do it.

Everything is really doable yourself if you're patient. Initial cost may be a little high with the purchasing of any required tools, but buy good tools and you keep them for life. Thumbs Up

My old man is a mechanic, but hasn't touched a bike in decades so is not too hot on all that, otherwise he'd do it for me! Still, I've got a whole workshop of tools should I choose.

Don't buy a haynes, download the proper Yamaha Service manual

https://www.mediafire.com/?fjn3mvgpgmt

it's free and more accurate than the haynes.

6K is a minor service on a FZ6, 12K is major, valve adjustment at 24K.

If that's what they're charging for oil and filter, I shudder to think what a "major" service would cost.

If you want a laugh, ask them for a breakdown of those costs, and if you can watch them doing the "inspections" that will be padding it out.

But really, it's out of warranty, I'd just do the oil and filters. Heck, treat it to new plugs if you're feeling craaaazy, staple the receipts into the service book, and put the rest in the tank.

Not being rude but these are the sort of questions you should be asking your garage.

Don't be afraid of sounding stupid when asking something, like what make of lubricants they use and never be afraid to discuss cost. I know some mechanics can come over a bit know-it-all but they deal with people all the time and there's not much they havn't heard already. If you don't get any luck there, speak to the garage foreman or manager. Just explain what you need to know.

If you plan on using the garage in the future, it's important to have a good relationship with them built on trust. A reliable and trustworthy garage can come in very handy, even if you DIY a lot.

If they don't appreciate you're business, f*ck 'em and find somewhere that does.

But yeah............DIY.

As if the dealer would tell me the truth! Laughing

"yes sir, you need new filters, oil, plugs, valves checked, new tyres, new engine, wash and polish, new helmet..."

As confirmed in this thread, it does seem a little high for oil and filter! I didn't want to be taken for a ride by the dealers as they tell me of this wonderous and fantastic (but unneccesary) service.

I'll have an ask around and see what I can find out/do, but if I need it, your help would be much appreciated. Thanks! Thumbs Up
