I am interested in knowing when you all put the bike away due to bad weather?

Personally, if the temperature is expected to be below 5 degrees C, I will use other transport. Very high or blustery winds are another reason i will leave the bike at home.

Rain doesnt bother me so much, but the thought of Ice, slush, snow or strong wind doesnt fill me with confidence on the bike.

Do some of you ride no matter what the weather?

lookiong forward to the replies.

thanks as always BCF'ers.

Hi Cheerfulgrin
I am still very new to the biking but since Sept when I past my CBT and got a little 125, I have been out as often as I can. So far I've done 800 miles on the bike, which was more than the previous owner did in 2 years.
When I get up of a weekend I look out the window and if it threatens sunshine then the bike comes out and I stay out until my fingers no longer work with the cold (so much for winter gloves). I haven't ventured out in the snow or with too much rain. But will most likely have a go at that once I get more experience.
The cold doesn't bother me too much, hell I used to go scuba diving under ice, now that is cold trust me.

I normally ride and commute year round whatever the weather.
However I was eventually actually stopped "in my tracks" by ice and snow last winter, resulting a long walk home and the bike being padlocked up at the side of the road for 3 or 4 days.
This year the bike has protested with a faulty starter switch.

A 5 degree limit is a bit wimpish if you ask me.

I'll ride in any weather except if I judged it to be impractical to do so, I've been out in the snow (including ungritted roads) and found it not to be as bad as people said. Possibly as it was snow and hadn't thawed/re-frozen in to a sheet of ice, which would have been considerably more dangerous; we haven't had that weather in SE really.

The challenge was to give up the car for a year or two so that me getting a motorcycle licence ended up "cost neutral" or even saving me money and part of that involves riding in all weather, and so far it's going well.

I will ride in anything except hurricane-force winds or ice/snow. I rode up until about the middle of last week, but the bike has been under a cover in my drive since. The problem isn't the main roads in London (which were mostly clear, even in the worst of the snow). The problem is the four 90-degree turns, on hills, that I need to make before I get to a main road. All of the roads immediately around my house are covered in packed snow/ice. I can't even walk on them, let alone pilot 500 pounds of metal over them.

Ice stops me. I rode in today on light snow and slush, but I'll likely leave it at home tomorrow because it'll be -5 tonight.

But biking is a pleasure activity, you're not less of a man for being a fair weather rider yes you are.

Most of my ride to work and back is along the A55 expressway at 70+ mph. if the weather turns to Shite and I have to ride along really slow I have found the usually inconsiderate drivers are even less considerate, which is why I don't bother if there is risk of ice or high winds.

If I was just riding across town then gales don't bother me, ice does though, even when gritted the roads are pretty slick round here.

I also read somewhere that below 10 degrees, most bike tyres lose most of their grip. Not sure how true that is?

Nah rubbish, I was still getting kneedown in 5 degree temperatures. It's when it's cold and wet do they lose a fair bit of grip. It's not just that, in the winter it's very greasy too.

I won't ride below -3c. I don't like messing about with ice.

I've got a car and a bike, I use the one I feel like using that day.

The bike's never 'put away', there's no temperature limit or anything, just some days I look at the weather and think 'sod that'. Other days, I think 'ooh yeah, bring it on'. If it doesn't move for three months, so be it.

I dislike being cold, I dislike being wet.
I particularly dislike being cold and wet.

Pretty much spot on for me too. Thanks to the geniuses who re-designed Glasgow designating the main route in and out of the city as a motorway, as a CBTer, I have to be prepared to add 15-20 minutes on to a journey time if I take the bike out. I imagine it'll get used much more for commuting when I can use the motorway.

I don't tend to stop riding as the weather gets worse, just fall off more.

Erm, well the CBR went away before Christmas... it has been away a few months now. Mid October... shes coming out in April ready for May Day unless I have a road legal monkey bike Mr. Green

Vara is all year round now.. I reckon she'll come off the road temporarily when the CBR/Bandit are running on the road again... just for repairs and yearly check ups Laughing

All this talk of the temperatures you'll go out in... Surely it depends on the journey length?

A 2 hour ride home at 2 degrees left me pretty cold. It wasn't dreadful, but my knees fingertips were numb, and I was a bit cold in general.

Shorter journeys haven't phased me at all yet. I think it was -1 today and I did a quick journey into town - about 20 minutes. That was absolutely fine.

I think the journey length and likely speed / road types used are probably just as important than road temperature and Weather.

On my way home from work the other night it took two minutes of heavy hail and sleet to turn the dual carriageway into slush, I was quite glad I'd used the car then, up until that point I'd be pining for the bike lol

I've used my Daytona for a few days per week, every week, until the snow came.

To be fair, Worcestershire doesn't get extreme weather, apart from flooding, and most of the journeys are around an hour or less. But for a few occasions, I've worn leathers every time (and only then wearing my textile jacket which I detest and leather trousers) and don't own a pair of winter gloves, only summer gloves and liners.

Some MTFU'ing and a liberal application of ACF50 is required in some quarters I think. I can occasionally borrow a car for taking people and things places, when its owner doesn't need it but in everything but a torrential downpour I'd rather take the bike and get there quicker with more of a smile on my face. The occasional quick roll on from slipway speeds to 100+ (kph) cheers me up no end.

I have been trying to use my bike as much as possible to get experience (passed tests 20/09/12) - no point in passing then putting the bike away for winter.

I have ridden in (and bloody enjoyed) sun, rain, wind, frost, dark mornings etc. My theory is when the dry roads and better weather comes, riding will be much more pleasurable, and I will have some valuable experience to take with me into the new season.

My daily commute is 80 miles mixed London and B roads so anything below -3 in 5am with ice will make me to get the car.

And its not the cold its the ice that I do not like.

I've not been stopped riding by the weather so far, most main roads are perfectly passable unless you want to get your knee down and the side roads just need a little concentration.

I only stop riding when I can't get the bike out without almost dropping it Razz

Yesterday I went out since roads cleared up.
It's official. I'm back on the road! Very Happy

Whenever snow and ice hits, my road hardly ever gets gritted and can't afford to fix bike if it is broken because of being dropped. Soon as the snow and ice has gone I'll be out though; don't care about wind or rain.
