The biggest problem I am finding at the moment from going from a bike with a top speed of 60ish to a bike which tops out at 80 on the flat is bloody speeding. Keep finding myself doing 70/75 in 60s. I really need to kept an eye on this as I really can't be bothered with points and a fine.

I cannot be the only one who has this problem.

Keep an eye out for speed cameras and coppers and you'll be fine.

I'm not sure anyone on here follows the speed limit. Rather they just pick a speed that's safe for the area.

.
I was the same when I went from a CG to an ER5 it seemed like a rocket ship. Smile lol

Even more so when I went from the ER5 to a Hornet. - This is 'assisted' by each step up in bike being a more capable machine and feeling more comfortable, and for want of a better word 'planted' on the road. This gives an added sense of security which TBH is valid as generally they are more in their capability envelope.

One of the main reasons I dont have a bigger bike is because I can't trust myself LOL ill learn one way or another. I am very mindful of it now though. Starting to think my next bike will be a nice simple cbf600 to start me off. Just bought my vada so that's some time off yet.

They maybe classed as 125s but my vada feels over twice as powerful as my DR! I could never dream of overtaking anything on my DR but I'm always over taking now.

Nothing wrong with speeding at times, eventually you develope a kind of sixth sense when to slow down.... Last time I was caught speeding was about 8 years ago (88 in a fiesta coming back from Glasgow). When I got my diversion that was usually sitting around 90 on the motorway.... coming home from work at night I'd usually be flat out most of the way (top speed was supposed to be 116... I could never get it above 115... lyin' bastids)

you'll also get used to the engine sound, and for example, at night on a dark road with little visual points of reference, you'll know your speed by the gear you are in and the revs the engine is doing and the noise it's making and how it all feels.

70/75 indicated in a 60 isn't going to be ridiculously over the limit. I don't think many coppers would take issue with a speed of (probably) 65-68mph.

As said, wait until you get a big bike, if you have trouble controlling your speed you probably will get banned then.

Even on the bigger bike, I'm not finding myself speeding any more often. I'm not a stickler, anyway -- I keep to the 30s in a 30, 40s in a 40, etc. And on the motorway, I'm on a naked. It feels uncomfortable, like my helmet is lifting off, much passed 75. So I tend to be within spitting distance of the speed limit, close enough that I just need to edge off the throttle slightly at speed cameras.

What I did find when going to a bigger bike is that I needed to re-calibrate my speed sense -- learn what the engine sounds like going 30 or 40, in various gears. That took a couple of weeks.

Went from a CG too a RS2, I think mentally your riding a 125, so your still holding that throttle wide open like you generally need too on 125's. 20 year old CG that fell apart as I rode it VS tidy RS2 was still a big enough difference too cross into speed limit breaking though.

When I rode kwak for a while did it less. Was only 250, but mentally, I was no longer riding a 125 so stopped trying too make it go as fast as I could. Mr. Green

Mentality of 'I am on a 125, must pin that throttle open too keep up!'?

Yeah I know the feeling, it's even more hard to contain yourself when you've not been out on your bike for a while due to weather, and you only got it before Xmas, so the 'new bike' excitement is still there. I may have got to work 15 mins early this morning for a reason... and it wasn't cos I got outta bed early (cos I didn't Laughing )

your speedo will be very wrong.

Checked mine this morning against a gps speedo on my phone, 70 indicated was closer to 66 actual

Obviously had to test the full range though and see how accurate it was at 85 Rolling Eyes

Speeding is entirely down to yourself, the bike isn't accidentally speeding, you are. Just keep an eye on the speedo

Had that problem when i moved from a CBR125 to my new CBR600f, regularly found myself cruising in NSL limits at 80-85 when i would of been thrashing it to 70 on my 125.

Over a couple of months though i got used to the big bike and now ride more sensibly.

And not even to a reasonably fast one - just from a slow one to a bit less slow one!

Can see why you don't want to get a bigger bike now! Razz

But yes, get a GPS to check what speed you are really doing.

G you have no idea what you're talking about. The vada feels like a completely different class of bike then the DR. Holding 75mph all day long should be fast enough for anyone.

The Vara (or at least my one) is damn accurate.

Desire X states 79 on an indicated 80 and will see 81 at the limiter on the M20.

It is a bit off between 25 and 30.. an indicated 30 is roughly 26 so I just do 35 in 30s. But above 60 it seems damn bang on.

kingsknight wrote:

I wouldn't say that personally... Laughing

Holding 75 on that bike, I sit around 70/75 on the way to work, I don't see that hurting it currently, it was an ex courier bike. But I do change the oil more than I change my pants.

The Vara is a slow bike, it is a bike you use if you are proper skint and have it available (that or saving funds.)

I only use a 125 as I'm saving to go to Spain on earned cash rather than proper savings. It keeps my CBR tucked away looking clean and means I can throw £60 at a set of sprockets on the Vara if needed.

CBR costs £40 a week to commute with, Vara costs £20.
CBR tyres cost £200 a pop (cheapest) and get 5000 miles of sensible riding.
Vara tyres cost £140 a set and get 10k+
Insurance is £6 a month on the Vara, £35 on the CBR.

It is a money saver, it is slow but it does the intended job of a 125.

The light on my speedo has been out for about 2 years now. After riding it through the winter I soon learned the engine tone/revs/gear for 30/60mph. Hardly look at the speedo now, I dont do much motorway stuff though.

Have you owned or ridden a decent 125 2 stroke for extended periods (one of the modern (sic) sports ones that will do 100mph or so?)
Have you owned or ridden a competition 2 stroke dirt bike that while it doesn't have the top speed, has up to a 1/3rd more power than said bikes that will do 100mph, as well as weighing under 2/3rds of your Varadero's weight?

If you're used to really really slow bikes and upgrade to just a slow bike, I can appreciate it's going to feel a big difference - but surely you must realise that in the grand scheme of things they are both pretty similar when compared to 100hp+ bikes?
And further; that when compared to even a 2 stroke 125, it's still going to feel pretty slow?

Even for many that are happy to sit at 70mph on the GPS; it's also about the responsiveness and ease that it responds at that point.
