I'm not really a dog person so I don't know the ins and outs of it but as far as I'm aware lots of small terriers and the like were bread as hunting dogs to send down rabbit holes. More of a purpose than lots of bigger dogs.

Jack Russells are terriers and were bread for a reason, it's got nothing to do with being a 'handbag' dog either. They are ratters. The serve a purpose.

Define 'proper dog'

Border Collie is a proper dog, you wont step on it, they don't constantly fucking yap or "bark" at anything that moves, they don't try and tear your ankles apart, they are a million times more intelligent.

I wouldn't want a boring collie that would be useless as a guard dog.
It would probably just sit and watch while your bike got nicked. Laughing
My Jack Russell has never tried to tear my ankles apart, or anyone else's for that matter.
As for the intelligence, the collie only seems to do what you tell it to do and nothing else.
Its a boring dog will a million times less character than a Jack.

Well my border collie was a great guard dog, as soon as anything or anyone came up the drive, he would let you know. He went mental when someone was trying to break in to the garage and would grate glass trying to get out and at them.

When my budgie came out of her cage during the night and fell in to a vase, he came and woke me up and brought me to the vase.

Border collie's are very intelligent and have loads of energy, everynight for about 13 years I had to do a 5 mile walk through the woods. He would be off the lead for most of it and do loads more running.

I've now got a labrador puppy and at 4 months is way bigger than a jack russel.

A Jack Russel would be better as a guard dog? If a Jack Russel attempted to attack me, I would just pick it up and put it in a bin. If you want to get a Collie to guard, just put it's ball somewhere on your bike


Is that not the idea, you tell a dog to do something and it does it? I mean that is the purpose of most dogs, working animals, you tell them to do something and they do.

A Collie could guard, given the choice I would rather be in a room with an angry JR than a Collie as the JR I would just laugh at.

So what can your JR do that's useful? Yap? Look like a rat?


My mates dad has 3 little terrier type things, white rats, all they do is yap at everyone and everything and run after people, like all terriers do, they don't do anything else.

my one Collie, doesn't yap/bark unless he is told to, he doesn't chase after anyone or anything unless I tell him, he also knows when people are friendly or not ( so can guard) he can herd if needs be, he can even open doors for me when my hands are full of stuff, he can and will sniff stuff out if you tell him, I didn't even teach him that.

Yappy dogs should be banned unless their owners train them to never ever yap, it drives me nuts.

Wouldn't go quite as far as shooting them, But I do agree with the dislike part. They are long haired, smelly dogs. I don't think I've ever seen a clean one, they just all smell like wet dog.


My Dog (Bitch), Not gonna be arrogant and say she's a 'proper dog'. But the Rhodesian is certainly one of my favorite, hence the reason she's the second one we've had.
