Afternoon all. I have a question that I'd like some opinions on.

I have an SV650 that is shortly due for an MOT, which I think it will fail.

I'm generally wondering whether people recommend me fix it and keep it, sell it as spares or repair, or break it apart and try and make some money on it.

I bought it a few months back as a simple form of transport. It's therefore slightly high mileage and some parts have seen better days. Because of this, I don't want to throw money at it, because I'll likely never see it again.

I'm fairly certain it's going to fail on the front discs being warped, but I'm sure there will be other things that need doing. I have no problem with fixing things and doing some maintenance, its just the money being used for a winter hack that I'm not keen on. Or should I take it on the chin as running costs of owning a bike?

Alternatively, I can break it to pieces and sell it. This is time consuming and could be a massive pain considering I have no garage. However, some parts are in excellent condition, and it has a fairly sought after exhaust system on it.

Final choice would be to see how it does in the MOT, and then sell it as a cheap repair project, potentially losing a couple hundred quid, but getting shot of it for now.

Or I could even declare it SORN and work on it on the cheap, over time. But again, no garage.

The bike in question is this one below. So, opinions, what would you do?

So you want to break it because it has a warped disk?
Why not commit suicide when you break a nail?

Because I'm expecting it to fail on more, and I can't warrant throwing too much money on a temporary bike, so am looking for the best way to get some money for it.

I will be seeing how the MOT goes first, but I just want an idea of what I'm doing before hand.

If I remember it was a bike you bought cos you lost your job ? I would try a m.o.t before you make up your mind, obviously worth more with one, buy second hand parts, what's it worth with a full ticket on it 1000 quid, no ticket 500 quid

Parts can't be that expensive for an SV?! I would ditch the breaking idea, in my experience is just takes so long to sell all those little items and for me it's a huge hassle.

Better to fix it up and then sell with a full 12 months MOT.

Not entirely sure. It's a neglected old bike, and has some knocks and creaks here and there. It works all the time, just the brakes aren't great at all, the forks feel like they need a good service, and its leaking oil from the clutch cover (although this is something I'll obviously attempt to fix before putting in for an MOT).

I left my job, but yea. I'm working now, but not full time, so wasting money isn't on my to-do list.

Parts for an SV are in abundance, but brake discs seem to be bloody expensive, and I don't particularly want second hand ones.

Doubt it'll be worth £1k even with a full ticket.

Still not convinced, although I do see them go privately for over a grand.

My main concern is if the MOT goes badly wrong, and it needs hundreds worth of fixing, making it financially stupid to do so.

The approach I took with cars was to MOT it and find out just what was wrong, fix the dangerous issues and get it road legal, then work through the advisory issues as and when so that they don't become fail issues next time.

You never know, it might pass with a new rotor and a bulb or so.

If it's your winter hack, MOT, figure out what's wrong and then SORN it and fix it ready for next winter?

Why not MOT it first, see what is wrong with it, and go from there? At least that way if you sell it, you can list everything an experienced (hopefully) MOT Tester has declared is wrong with it, or you can decide to keep it.

good point, I'd happily buy an MOT fail if I've got the MOT paperwork detailing what's wrong.

would be looking to pay less than with an MOT, but only by about the cost of parts.

Paddy I'm in Bournemouth, and both you and Garth are vultures. Garth - I have no idea, seriously. Not sure i want to just get rid, but for the right price I'd just get shot of it.

So general consensus is to just put it through an MOT and go from there?

As has been said, just put it through an MOT. You never know, it might be in better nick than you think! Wink
