I started skiing and switched to snowboarding after 2 years, am pretty decent now. (On and off for 12 years or something like that)
I think people underestimate the learning curve for snowboarding. It is much more unforgivable than skiing.
I bet anyone who's snowboarded a while has done this at least a couple of times:
Going "straight" at X speed. Turning just the tiniest bit and due to a lack of attention, clipping your front side sending you FLYING unexpectedly. This is how you break shit... Not to mention the amount of times you fall on your arse trying to learn which may or may not put your coxes in danger. Wrists are easy to break too cause you fall so often that it's easy to stick a hand out wrong.
Skiing: The plough goes a long way Laughing
Also: People think it's easier doing jumps and stuff on snowboards. It's not. (at least not until you're past the basic stuff)

Or people found out roughly what size they needed and then bought an appropriate board off ebay. I know I got trolled, but what a load of bollocks.
Snowboarding is not an exact science, you don't need to know the length to 4 thou.

Sure enough... Laughing

I went snowboarding once, it hurt when I hit the deck. Broke my collar bone, pro.

But then again, just to keep the effect of this thread, I broke my back opening a packet of crisps.

Reality: Went for 1 snowboarding lesson.

I'm qualified as a snowboarding instructor, and struggle to understand the logic here.

There is a thread on here somewhere. When I tried a jump last year and pretty much broke my back after taking a jump wrong and landing ass first on a bit if ice.

It put me in Pinderfields (back specialists) hospital. And I stupidly got my mate to carry me out then take me home in the back of his car.

Bit of a example:

Sister: 5'3 9st - rides 145
Me: 5'10 11 1/2 st - ride 147 jib but 154 mountain
JB: 6'8 18st - rides a 165 standard.

Between my sister and JB there is nealy 18inch height and he weighs twice as much but only ride a board 20cm longer.
It might not sound like much but is is the difference between taking a barge into the curves rather than a booster.

Nothing but bad can come from buying a board of ebay without any experience.

Mmmmm, you sort of get it Mark.

There are many more factors to consider, by your equation you'd need to be 9' tall to ride this board.

https://winterstick.com/product_info.php?products_id=11&osCsid=b7asmtknv2gj61ugev2dbgedp7

For a beginner, a beginner level board that comes anywhere between the chin and nose is a great place to start.

Boots and bindings in my opinion make more of a differance, softer flexing setups being more forgiving when making mistakes.

I'm 5'8" and personally i ride a medium flex 156 on piste and hitting the kicker but have riden a 161 off piste in the powder.

As was said above it's not an exact science, and your way of giving advice sounds more like battering people with your opinion.

mark you talk some shit, im 6'4 and i or anyone else can ride on anything,
anybody can adapt their riding style to anything, long or short stiff or soft, rocker, camber,

same with ski's some things are easier depending on the conditions, terrain, or the individual skier/rider, but not essential to actually skiing/riding,

eg, on ski's i ski on 174s in the park or piste, or 190s in powder,
but i could ski on massive straights or little gay blades
same for a board, i have a 170 board for powder and a little board for fucking about on,

although i don't instruct any more, i am actually a trained instructor, and not just a pissy level 1 basi instructor either

Oddly all I've ever done to myself on a snowboard is pop my finger out of it's socket. Strange really, as apparently there's no way my board could be right for me, yet on your perfectly proportioned board you broke your back Thinking

Thank god.

The amount of people asking for advice on buying snowboards was doing my head in.

Laughing

So many BASI 1 'instructors' knocking about its unbelievable. I considered doing it just to keep myself interested off season but its a bit illogical as I'd never get to do the required 35 hours snowschool experience bit without spending a fortnight in manchester or going on a specific holiday. The indoor place is a 300+ mile round trip for a starters. Kind of takes the laugh out of it for me Laughing

Just for the record, I am 5'8"/12st and have just downsized from 158 to a 156. No broken backs to speak of as of yet Rolling Eyes

Isn't that the same guy that you posted about a while back having a bike crash (iirc) and being unlikely to walk again? Confused

Take it he got better then.

Tell you what though Mark, the number of people in your immediate circle who seem able to break their backs and go on to make a miraculous recovery seems way higher than the national average. Maybe you should consider a new career as a healer/chiropractor?

My best mate Jamie has broken his spine.

[...5 weeks of Woe Is Warped later...]

I've only seen him twice since it happened.

See also fantasy girlfriend fell out of a taxi, broke her back, died, got better, walked it off.

I'm not sure he's even aware of what he's writing most of the time. I mean, it's charitable to believe that.
