Putting it on it's side is definitely where it went wrong, bikes don't like being on their side. In my lessons I dropped an ER6 on it's side trying to do manual handling, seem to remember the instructor saying there was always a chance it wouldn't start when we picked it back up, and it was something to do with the oil and fuel. Longer you leave it on it's side, the worse.

No inertia lock that I know of on mine, however it could be hydrolocked? When lying the bike down, oil could possibly have seeped past the rings and is now sat in the combustion chamber.

Edit: After cranking, are your sparkies wet?
