...along with Mcjamweasel and Nighteyes.

We went out for a ride yesterday and found ourselves drawn to the Cat and Fiddle. It was quite funny really...Colin just buggered off to enjoy the road, I (apparently) went a bit too slow (I am a novice though and it's a very scary road!!) and Helen cruised along behind me laughing at my slowness and caution on the corners.

I almost came off at one point, I think it's a good job we went during late afternoon/early evening because there were not that many bikes around to put me off.

I'm just proud I've done it and wanted to tell everyone! Laughing

What's so amazing about the cat & fiddle road?

People always go on about it I just never found out why it's so amazing? Confused

You wouldnt get me on that death trap of a road on a bike (its bad enough in a car), I have known many a few bikers who have died or been serioulsy injured on that road Sad

Just some people take it far too fast and end up binning there bikes, plus theres no room for error either.

Cant see the attraction, there's lots of good roads that are less busy and have less police around.

There were no cops around at all yesterday, like I said I think we picked a good time of day.

AND???

Its got a similar reputation to about a thousand other roads in the UK - depends where you live. I personally thought that road was okay...I suppose it depends on the confidence of the rider.

You do realise though that the reason such roads have such a reputation is mainly due to the born again bikers who have too much money than sense - go out and buy a superbike (way outta their handling capabilities) and go out on a glorious hot day and over cook it on a twisty road.

For regular riders who actually ride their bikes as a commute, or since they were kids or every day, these roads are nowt to be worried about...not really!

Pft pansies :p ,
try it with a fully loaded up late 70's bike with suspension to match IN THE SNOW Shocked now that was scarey.

Its a great road but you have to take every corner very carefully, i'd say allot of accidents occour because of people overestimateing their abilitys and underestimateing the very serious bit of road they are on,
as clanger said, most everyday bike riders know when to crack the throttle open and importantly when not to.

Never ever ever take it any faster than you are comfortable with or you will you will fdind yourself on the list of statistics on the poster outside the toilets of the cat and fiddle pub.

There is a road off the cat and fiddle which is far more scarey, features include a cliff and a dirt road, can't say i'd reccomend it much Razz

The road has a 50 limit, and with all the twists and turns you'd either have to be incredibly stupid or have an amazing bike to break that limit safely.

Go have a go on colin's bike... you'll find it's way too easy... as in the point you click into 2nd gear probably, as it's downgeared.

Hi

It was a 60 limit until recently (and I was one of the people who put in an official objection to the reduction, all of which were ignored). There are straight section where 150mph would be easily in reach, just as there are bends where 15mph is about right.

All the best

Keith

It never used to be!
Its only since the biker death statistics that the speed limit has been altered

Anyone who attempts to reach 150mph on that road falls into my "stupid" category and should expect to be involved in an accident. With not a lot of sympathy from me either.

That's not very encouraging. The last thing I would do is laugh at someone for riding at their own pace. I'm not the fastest rider, and I would be pretty pi**ed off if I thought people were laughing at me for going too slow, or trying to make me go faster.

Noooo....she wasn't being mean in the slightest! She was very encouraging. I didn't mean it to sound like she was laughing at me in a nasty way. I was going really really slow because I didn't know the road and there are lots of blind bends, when in reality if I knew the road (or been a more experienced rider) I would have been able to be slightly less cautious.

We all know what she's like, she was laughing maliciously Wink
