Evening everyone, I hope you can help. My speedfight 2 has been playing up since November. I was happily commuting home from work one night and about 10 miles in when the throttle just died bike ticked over til I pulled up then cut out. It took me about 5mins to start another 5 miles same thing happened. This time I used the kickstart to fire it up and it sounded like a really loud pop spluttered then started on the 2nd kick. This happened again on the following day so I thought hell ill try a new spark plug hey presto perfect til last week same symtons almost sounds like it's farting when you open the throttle changed spark plug perfect again but symtons started again tonight 3days after spark plug change. Both plugs have heavily carbon tips spark is fine I've had the carb off and used some stp carbon spray on it tonight ticks over fine but not taken it for a spin yet. I'm pretty savvy being a gas engineer but I'm no mechanic any help very much appreciated! Cheers andy

If there is lots of carbon on the spark plug the bike is running rich. How long had you owned it before the problems first occurred? I would make sure the air filter is clean and dry.

check the reed petals are not broken thats a common fault with the speedfights be it a 50 or 100 cc.if you look at the carb you will see it fits onto a aluminium manifold take the four bolts out that hold that on and the petals are underneath it if they ahve any damage replace them with new ones.you can buy aftermarket ones made from carbon that you cut to size these are pretty good.

Hi all thanks for all the replies. Spark plugs are ngk's br8es from my local garage. Yeah really black at tip, so I guess your right and she's running rich. Just been on a tootle around the country lanes round me and she seems fine again. Had the filter out feels moist but not wet. There are two screws on the carb big one with a spring I can adjust with my fingers and I pilot screw (fuel mix?) which I have wound in clockwise and back out 1 3/4 turns which I'm told is factory set. As for the big screw and spring I guess that's the idle speed? As for the reed plates I guess I have to remove the engine cover to get at all four bolts of the intake? Would I be right in saying loss of compression would happen all the time and make no difference with a new plug? Again thanks for all the replies. Andy

Thanks is that the correct one for the 2000 model? I asked the local garage to check as the Haynes manual I have says it's the one I stated above local garage checked and confirmed that but if that's it that would makes some sense but not why she's running rich. Be fine again since Sundays coming home tonight problem started again bloody thing! Looks like it's a trip into the garage let an expert take a look

Had the bike back one day. Bill came to 166 notes plus i supplied a makau ht lead at 20. 4 hours labour with 2 spent burning the deposits out of the exhaust. the bike actually sounds like a 2 stroke now so can understand why they did it. but....... on my way to the lock up this morning, bike cut out, massive back fire and now wont start. only new thing i noticed this morning is the throttle seemed to be sticking. With the so called experts having it a week and with a bill near 200 it certainly not going back. What i have found this morning is the carb top has worked loose (screw missing) and the slide does not move up and down smoothly this must be why it wont start. would any one agree that i need to strip and fully clean the carb? replace the seals, could it be that simple?

hi copycat, it is an auto choke, what im thinking is if the slide is sticking then would agree with you that the choke is also sticking.

the other thing i am considering is if the exhaust was that clogged whats the combustion chamber and piston like!...... I have all weekend as i have no work on so i think a couple o cans of larger and using the kitchen table (depending on wife) will be just the ticket lol

I have had the carb of tonight and cleaned all the jets reset the pilot screw again and ordered the missing screw. I have a question and hope someone can help the needle was very slightly bent the spring clip was 2nd from bottom and the Haynes manual says 2nd from top so I've moved it. What effect would this have being in the wrong position??.

if the needle has been messed with it may of been a failed atempt by someone to deristrict the scoot

yes i know its a 100cc and not ristricted anyway

the needle being slightly bent wont help either
