Hmmm. I must be doing something wrong - I've had 180 showing before reserve (although it is downgeared so thats probably more like 150).

I got 60 miles out of my last tank of fuel (with 2 zx6r's Wink Rolling Eyes )

16.5 litres to fill up again - somebody work it out as I can't be arsed

although I didn't think it was too bad considering what I was doing to it Rolling Eyes

i have had my latest bike about 10 days and i had to fill up AGAIN, so far ive put in about 50 quid. Its a bit depressing compared to a 50cc. What is the best way to keep fuel consumption down, revs or speed? I am trying to ride predominantly at 6k rpm for a bit, see if that helps, and smoother braking and accelerating (less fun, but im a poor student, save the heavy stuff for when im rich -/the occasional time a ped boi in a nova starts revving at the lights etc-). But ive been told the carb might just be fucked and putting in a shite mix, especially since;
Arrow it doesnt idle worth jack
Arrow revs randomly droop on occasion
Arrow sometimes riding with choke on makes it much much much much smoother
Arrow when you stop fast (ie back coming up) it stalls
Arrow amazingly bad petrol consumption
Arrow poorer perfromance then apparently should be acheiving (fastest ive had is 95mph ish, whereas should do 110 reasonably easily)

Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad
oh well

If it runs a lot better when the choke is on, then the bike may be running very lean, so the choke richens the mixture up and runs better.

You'll be wanting to get that sorted, think a carb clean and re-jet is in order.

Shouldn't be too much hassle to fix though I doubt.

Yeh a mate mentioned that... but could it be the other way round, too rich? just due to fuel consumption more then anything + lack of idling. Either way its going in for brake bleeding weds, so might say strip and clean the carbs and sort out the jets perhaps. Only thing is i dont trust garages, been tuckered up too many times.

Hi

I would expect the Goose to be fairly good on fuel, but then you are comparing it with something that was very good on fuel!

Some bikes do seem prone to stalling when you brake very hard to a standstill. My RS does. Suspect it is the floats in the carb getting confused under braking, but never worried about it.

In theory the engine is at its most efficient on full throttle with the revs at the point of peak torque and in top gear.

In practice the wind resistance will mean that the bike is going to be wasting a load of power keeping you at that point, while loads of other factors will also come into play.

Also in reality it will depend on how the engine is set up. EG, a bike with an accelerator pump carb will use a load of fuel when at low revs round town, when the throttle is being opened and closed a lot. A slide carb will work badly if you just give it full throttle at low revs. A CV carb should sort it all out itself.

Only real advice is to try and keep it smooth, and to sort out your carb so that it does not have some of its more dubious habits.

All the best

Keith

I'm no expert, but if it was already running rich, then putting the choke on would just flood it and the engine would cut.

Judging by what you say with the choke improving the ride, then it sounds like it's running lean. But I don't know if that would make the fuel consumption really poor, as you'd expect the opposite, so I'm not sure really, but sure Keith will step in and help shortly Thumbs Up

<EDIT> I is psychic! He got there before me, didn't I say he would? hehe nice one Keith Thumbs Up </EDIT>

Hi

Thumbs Up to Yams. The choke will make the mixture richer. However exactly how it works will depend on the design of the carb.

But, idle mixture is controlled by different parts of the carb than the mixture at full throttle, and changing one will have next to no effect on the other.

All the best

Keith
