It`s a funny old world.
I was working in Norfolk the other day and as usual when I heard a bike I naturally looked round just out of interest.
I knew the bikes were small by thier noise.

Four lads appeared on 50cc bikes including one of them little two-smoke Aprillia`s.
They stopped near us and used the shop.
I was having a look at thier bikes when they came out and we had a bit of a chat about bikes.
One lad told me about how his grandad was an old biker and raced in his past.
Another told me about how the plod always seem to turn up when ever they stop and this was the case when I was there.
They seemed like a decent bunch of lads with a bit of a genuine interest in bikes.

That got me thinking back to when I was scuttling about on 50cc bikes.
Exactly the same scenario, different bikes, different people, nothing has really changed.
We wer`nt that bad and we thrashed the living daylights out of our bikes trying to get the last extra mph out of them Smile .

40 years on and no real change?, still canning little two-smokes to within an inch of thier life Thumbs Up

I REALLY wanted to have a go of that little Aprillia Laughing

Brings back memories of the late 70's when my mates and I used to ride just for the hell of it on our unrestricted 'peds!
We all had a different bike and between us we had an SS 50, Fizzy DX, TY 50 and an AP 50. I used to lust after a Fantic Caballero in the showroom of a local dealer but even those days it cost over £500 IIRC.

The great news is that my son has now got the bug (mind you he is only 12!) and is already looking out for a cheap moped to restore in time for when he's 17!

Happy days Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

I guess on the most part, the 16/17 year old plastic fantastic scooters and that are not all the "ped-bois" that we make them out to be. I know I wasn't.
It just depends if they're willing to listen to what an experienced biker has to say as advice etc or if they're cocky little fuckers and think they know it all already.

Everyone would have pointed the finger at me and called me a ped-boi chav trying to be all cool at 16. Truth was, I was 18, and my mates £300 Speedfight with super-loud exhaust was all I could afford when I was earning £44 per week. I wore trackies over my jeans for warmth and I used a Moto-X helmet and goggles as that was what I used on my mountain bike and I was used to it. I looked like the stereotypical chav. But i'm not.

think most of them seem to be supermotos in 50cc now

there is a lad who comes to the track to watch his mate

he has the same 50cc ped i had when i started riding

he seems ok and keeps his ped clean tidy and doesnt frape it everywere he goes and wont deristrict until next year

seems well spoken (meaning i can understand him)

the others all have broken chinese or peugeot scooters and covered in monster or red bull stickers to hide the scratches

and can all do 60mph innit blud

This was what I had

https://img801.imageshack.us/img801/1079/1982suzukits50er.jpg

Scooters then were proper scooters (except we called them step throughs) things like the Puch Maxi and Honda Express, with baskets on the front; one or two things started to appear with added plastic, but they were for gurls!

I've got a bit of time for some of the better and most popular sporty 50cc twist and go's, as things like the Aprilia SR50 Racing, actually handled and braked well for the first time, with big for a scooter 13" wheels and sticky tyres. They could use far more power than an unleashed 50cc engine could provide too, so these early sports scooters will be classics in time. Unfortunately things like the WRC Speedfight LC might also be classic 50's one day?

One I would put as a future classic though would be the Honda XR8S, the first aluminium framed scooter, and it was well built and had 55mph potential from it's engine with a bit of tuning.

As for bike's the Derbi Senda the first modern liquid cooled 50cc with over 8bhp, and the Aprilia AF1 50 and RS50's will one day be classics, as will the trendy looking Rieju RR50's etc.

I've seen some pretty astonishing things here with the kids and their peds, the worst has to be bearing witness to a complete pleb texting whilst on a roundabout, eyes fixated on the phone, pointing towards the bloody footwell.

I know they aren't all bad though, and in honesty, I kind of regret not going through the 17 year old ped stage.
