I've just bought a Versys, paid for it and I need to get my insurance sorted out. I'm with Carole Nash, I have the old ER6 and the Street Triple on a fully comp policy.

The Street Triple is in storage for the winter, miles away from where I live. I've been using the ER6 through the winter and it's parked on the street. It's taxed and has an MoT.

If I take the ER6 off my insurance policy and put the Versys on, as I understand it this is not allowed as it must have insurance if it's not SORNed. Alternatively, I could SORN it, but it's still not supposed to be on the street. I'd like it to stay where it is till it sells as it gives me something to chain the Versys to.

What is the penalty for keeping a non-SORNed bike without insurance? And what is the penalty for keeping a SORNed bike on the street? Is there anything I can do in advance to avoid bother (apart from taking it off the street)? I hear posting empty envelopes to DVLA and getting proof of postage can cover yourself, any other suggestions?

From the gov.co.uk website:

"If you don’t make a SORN when you have to you’ll automatically be fined £80, will need to get a new tax disc and must pay any tax arrears. You could also get a County Court Judgement against you, be fined a minimum of £1,000 and be liable to prosecution."

And from the Sheffiled Gov website (first place I could find anything about it but pretty sure it will be the same country-wide):

"It is an offence to use or keep an unlicensed vehicle on a public road. The maximum fine is £1,000 or 5 times the annual rate of duty for the vehicle, whichever is the greater."

So you've been done for not having insurance? What is it, a £40 bribe? That's definitely cheaper than insurance ...

That covers you not SORNing when you should, but if you did SORN it, what's it doing on the street?

Plate off, rape-alarm cover might do it. It entirely depends on who's going to take an interest in it.

It was an no SORN for a month October or November last year. So the fuckers wouldn't give me tax until I pay the 40 quid or woteva even though I was not using the bastad bike. I hate DVLA and their shenanigans.

I think what walloper is talking about is a lapse in tax only, the DVLA I don't believe (useful caveat) are able to cross reference SORN info with the insurance database just yet.

Walloper's bike wasn't 'seen' on the street, it was picked up as not being taxed or SORN'd on the DVLA database.

I think...

Thumbs Up

I could've sworn there was a thread recently about someone being sent letters about not having insurance, but I can't find it now. Confused

[EDIT]

Here it is:

£100 - still probably cheaper than insurance.

My BMW sat SORN'd for 18 months without insurance with no quibbles. It also sat with tax but no insurance for 6 months again, with no quibbles.

The DVLA (unless they're doing one of their infamous sweeps) work only from what their (often flawed) database tells them, letters are generated automatically as are the fines.

My question would be, does the DVLA db talk to the askmid db? I think probably not, at least not automatically. They might do a periodic comparison but... I just don't know.

If you cover the bike up, SORN it (if its not already taxed) short of some DVLA/Police jobsworth targetting entirely by chance one covered bike out of thousands; I'm not sure how you'd get into bother.

I might be completely wrong though.

Thumbs Up

I wonder how long before you HAVE to sorn on line. If they keep losing cases over non delivery from the GPO you can bet they will be thinking of alternatives.

Wurser....

The bastads let you tax online and APNR can 'see' you have tax but the cnuts still want to 'do' you for 'failure to display'. Any cnut who wants to know can just check on-line if there is tax on the vehicle so why the redundant rule?

Phannies. Mad
