I have a fairly large guitar amp. Not huge, but not tiny either.

This is the amplifier:
https://assets.peavey.com/download.cfm?file=/images/small/03584290_9269.jpg&name=Vypyr_30_-_Front.jpg

Approximate specifications:
Weight: 15-17kg
Depth: 26cm
Height 45cm
Width: 60cm

Which I want to be able to carry on this bike:
https://blu.stb.s-msn.com/i/3A/4CCDB16B77FA63D2512668DD1D2E33.jpg

I want something that's secure for 10-20 miles of riding. Not too much of a pain to mount/dismount a few times a week.

Basically I want to be able to lug it around to band practise and stuff.

Anyone have any ideas on simple ways to carry it on the bike?

Without a Rack you're expecting a lot from the seat and grab rails. The weight is negligible but the size is the killer.

If you strap-it-on-to the seat and rails it will rock about unless bungeed very carefully.

It may warrant a tug from the filf if they are concerned that it looks unsafe i.e. could fall off or interferes with control of bike.

A luggage rack is what you want then just bolt a plank as wide as the amp on the rack and bungee onto the plank.

idea:

I bet if you ebay or gumtree you'll pick something up for half that.

Interesting, thanks Walloper!

The size is definitely the problem here. If it was smaller I would just wrap the cargo net around it on to the rear seat Smile

It should be noted that it's not just the read grab handle and seat on this bike. There are also luggage handles underneath the bike, highlighted in red here:
https://i.imgur.com/mwWWEgT.jpg

Basically these things, but just run underneath a little bit and bolt to the frame:
https://i.ebayimg.com/t/SUZUKI-GS500-GS-500-2005-MODEL-REAR-GRAB-LUGGAGE-HANDLES-REAR-LIGHT-BRACKET-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/$(KGrHqJ,!gwE6266u-+dBOzCkuloV!~~60_12.JPG

However that doesn't really help with the size of the thing... just an extra bungee point Sad

Oddly I''d say the complete opposite of what walloper has said, I'd say the biggest problem would be the weight and not the size.

A bungee net should go over it size wise easily enough, using bits like the pillion footpegs to secure it, but the weight could stretch the net as you go round corners risking it going over the side.

That said I carried a 10 year old desktop pc home from work once strapped over the pillion seat as described above and had no issues. It is probably similar in size and weight to an amp.

Yeah, like walloper says really. Get a luggage rack and tons of cargo nets/bungee straps. I had a Renntec on my GPZ and it'd take my guitar amp without too much trouble I reckon.

The Renntec gives you a solid and flat base to attach to though - quite a bit more secure than a spongy seat.

15kg Amp against a 55kg Tart? I'd let a tart hang onto the back of my bike before I'd trust strapping an amp on. Smile

Stop titting about and get a car if you want to move big/heavy stuff!

Big stuff + bike = wobbly ----> sudden braking/sudden manouvre = crash/broken bike/broken body ---> loss of cash/earnings!

If you dont believe my equation (formular) just add time and I told you so!

I just fitted pannier racks to an ER6F. They are just an assembly of steel pipes (as you have there) with 'cross braces' attached using 6mm bolts. If you are handy with a drill and a hammer you could phannie some 'cross braces' to go over the seat, bolt/clamp onto your existing Strap-It-On-To-Me's and fab a plate to support the amp.
If you look for a local Steel Stock Holder who can sell you some Off-Cuts (for Tea-Money) some bolts from B&Q would have a rack clashed together for under twenty quid. Paint it black and you can install/remove as you wish. (If you want to carry a tart rather than an amp.)

I'm 18 with a fault accident against me and a student living in the city, having held my car licence only a year. Car insurance would be equally as painful as the guitar amp being inserted up my anus. Sad

But yes... if mounted securely... it can't really be any worse than carrying a pillion? Confused

Neat idea! Although wouldn't be able to attempt it until I'm at my Dad's where all the power tools are!

Adequately lubricated it's surprising what some folk have had shoved up their arse.

Do not use bungees. Won't work.

Use a ratchet strap - such as this one;

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Draper-Ratchet-Tie-Down-Strap-750-kg-incl-Free-Delivery-DRA64216-/150807614780?pt=UK_Tickets_Travel_Luggage_CA&hash=item231cd5953c

There are cheaper ratchet straps, but I've tried them and they're shit. The one I've linked above is the one I use, and yes I have carried my amp on my bike (Vox AD30VT).

Cheers,
Dan

A friend used to carry a similar sized amp, but might have been slightly smaller on his Diversion 600. He used to put a bungee from the pillion peg, up and through the grab handle on the top of the amp and down to the other pillion peg, he'd then chuck a cargo net over and bungee that down.

He'd then try and lift the bike off it's side stand holding onto only the amp, if he could hold the bike upright holding onto just the amp, he was happy.

I have contemplated a ratchet strap. With a ratchet strap I could easily secure the amp from side-to-side movement using the underside luggage handles. However the length of the amp makes me wonder how I would secure it against backwards and forwards movement. Obviously that's a biggie to deal with because as pepper says, if I have to brake harshly it could move!

How do you strap yours for backwards + forwards movement?

On a side note... trying to think of a punk/pop rock song which sounds good when played as only the guitar.

I usually just strap to the seat, the softness can help keep objects steady rather than the object trying to slide about on a hard plank or rack.

The bungees with a central link are good (spider some people call them) if you can find somewhere solid to connect them to. If it feels solid then it won't move about when you lean or go over bumps.

You got quite a bit on there! I think if you can manage a big toolbox like that, the amp should be no problem if fastened correctly. I think I'll grab some straps like dan linked to and see how mocking things up on the bike goes.
