Wind - My worst enemy.

Had a simple journey to make today, Naaarwich to Cambridge. Most of the roads are long, single/dual carriageway with large open spaces either side.

Journey this morning there was good. Clear, dry roads, not too busy and giving me a good chance to really test out my new zzr. The journey back, however, consisted of the worst f**king side winds I have ever encountered. Alot of the ride back was me hunched over to me right fighting the sweeping winds, and at one point it almost knocked me off.

I did spartan type screaming in anger for most of the journey. It crippled my speed, and I saw a few bikes coming the opposite way facing the same problem.

People complain about snow, ice, rain. My complaint is wind. Wind ruined my day.

Know what you mean, just came back on the M20 and nearly got blown on to the hard shoulder a few times.

I find the only things that help me are keeping low and sticking my knee out as open as it will go, pointing that knee toward the direction the wind is hitting me. It actually seems to pull me towards the wind that is trying to blow against me so it feels like I counteract it. Dare I say it but it was actually starting to get fun on a longish journey from York to Glasgow.

It feels like sailing the bike but it does get really cold on your balls!

Try living up here - 40mph gusts aren't unusual in winter. We've got 70mph winds forecast for Wednesday, and I've seen them exceed 100mph. Wind is the biggest showstopper here by far.

Riding in squalls and strong gusting side winds is a fecking nightmare.

Cambridge as it was today. I followed a lady in a mobility scooter for 5 minutes on the way home. She was in the middle of the road. But the GoPro ran out of juice.

Rode to Northampton the other week in hardcore winds. I was barely touching 70mph and I felt like I was all over the place. Probably moving left/right 1 metre or so in the lane. It can be rather scary as a new rider! I actually felt like my front wheel was going to get blown from under me, I resorted to lying on the petrol tank, haha!

I know in the right (or wrong!) conditions, anything is possible, but realistically, is there any chance of being blown over?

Just got back in, On the way out, the Passive Aggressor couldn't get into 5th, every time I tried, the headwind slowed me down till I had to change back to 4th.

On the way back in though, barely had to touch the throttle and I was bumping the limiter at the lofty speed of 56mph indicated. Sucked when I was travelling side on to the wind.

I had it on the Severn Bridge today... you kind of get used to leaning over slightly then you get to the bridge supports and all wind dies away so you straighten up only to be hammered a split second later.... Going towards Bristol is even worse as you get used to leaning over slightly to compensate then you have the joy of the hill at the end of the bridge swirling the wind around.

Tungtvann, not sure about the 'blown over' but I know you can be knocked into the other lane. I was told that you just have to relax and don't fight the wind too much as you can over compensate

I find either having my elbows out or tucked into my sides can help a bit depending on conditions

I went out on Sunday and considered turning back, I wasn't comfortable with hanging off to the right to keep upright and there was all sorts of rubbish on bends after the snow and ice had gone

I once "hurried" along Belgian / northern France motorways for an hour or two to make it to Calais on time for a train. The land there was as flat as the Netherlands, and the wind that day was intense. Felt a bit like sailing through a storm while clinging on to the ship's rails, or something.

But for all that, I didn't find it scary. It just required concentration and slightly gritted teeth.

My GF really hates riding in the wind, but on some rides she complained about it, I scarcely noticed it. I'm not sure why that is.

I didn't notice the wind as much last night, for a change. I was more concerned about not being able to see a thing -- spitting, sideways rain (not nice, wash-everything rain) and horrible road spray. On the plus side, I wasn't concerned about being blown off the road. I couldn't see the road!

The strong winds and gusts are bad but my pet hate is the shite they blow into the road.

Riding home last night in the pissing rain and gales I ran over a road sign, narrowly avoided a pane of glass and all sorts of litter blowing all over the place.

Oh and the M2 bridge was fun last night. Caught the (wet) rubber expansion joint whilst banked over fighting a sidewind. Brown pants ensued.
