Oh crap. I actually like HG. There's something comforting about a retail chain...you know what to expect. Shame. Sad

There is a HG store near me, they are very expensive compared to the local independent motorcycle shop.

Keep in mind this is the UK distributor going bankrupt not the main company.

A lot of it is down to difficult trading times and the lack of summertime that we have had this year.
Add on top a lot of people are struggling to get credit for new bikes and it tends to run down the chain, no new bikes, no new kit.

Speaking to a manager recently at a Hein Gericke branch there has been a steady drop off in business only picking up while they had BIG sales on. Reading the pages of BCF people are looking for jackets and trousers that cost less than £100 a piece so Hein Gerickes main trade in Gore-tex items costing £200+ has priced them out of the market. The budget Sheltex range starts at £100 so still out of many peoples budget.

We are now back in a situation where commuter bikes are costing the same or more than a small car, a situation that 10 or so years ago caused the influx of grey import 400's and parallel imports from the US and Europe. As it is up until 2 years ago British models were being exported to Europe because the strong pound made it worthwhile.

I think the bottom line is Motorbikes and their associated accessories are becoming too expensive for a hobby and too expensive as a cheap way to get to work. The rising cost of oil over the last 10 years has been particularly shocking. A 4litre tub of fully synthetic Motul is now retailing at around the £55 mark, add a genuine oil filter and you are looking at over £60 for an oil change so people are buying from the discounters on Ebay where the same is only £35 a tub which is further causing bricks and mortar shops to go to the wall. Add in the rising cost of shop rents and it is becoming almost impossible to run a business.

Agreed, just as big out of town superstores decimated the high street, so the internet is wiping out all kinds of niche market retailers. Sad really, I so much prefer going into a shop & handling & trying on gear than just taking a chance on a bloody jpeg on a screen.

Except it isn't Motul, never has been Motul and isn't even made to the equivalent standards as Motul.

Motul 300V exceeds SG ratings, Hein Gericke meets SG ratings.

So why do you think it is Motul?

Dammit, where am I going to try helmets on now before buying off of eBay? Sad

Yes, x-posted from MCN.

How would that be different from any other of their eternal sales?

The simple economics of it are that high street space costs a lot more than a warehouse down the industrial estate behind the pallet fire, or some drop-shipping geezer shifting (potentially untaxed IME) gear from his cousin in Pakistan or China.

It's hard to see how they can turn it around while maintaining their current locations. Damn shame for their staff, but there's only so much premium money out there to be spent - a quick jaunt to their website, click on the gloves image on the front page, and it links to "Hein Gericke Alpha gloves, £99". Whoa. Did we emerge from our 4 year economic slump overnight? I missed that memo.

Their kit went downhill in a big way after it was taken over a few years back.

The sizes are all standardised "fat American" now as well. Big waists and little short legs. None of their stuff fits me any more.

They have also largely stopped stocking the usefull stuff like oil and air filters and the sundries that you find yourself short of on a weekend when you've been getting the bike ready for its MOT like a horn or an odd bulb.

Frankly. I haven't forgiven them yet for stopping making Master 4 gloves. After fifteen years of looking, I finally find the one style of motorcycle gloves in the entire world that are truly waterproof and they stop making them six months later.

Fuckers. It's no more than they deserve for pulling shit like that.

Not true.

I'm 6 foot with a 38/40 waist, 33 inch inside leg and their Gore-Tex Explorer TRG pants are long enough that I can use ProBoots with them unlike virtually every other manufacturers trousers. In fact they are long enough that they still reach the bottom of my boots when riding.
They also do other trousers that are shorter in the leg for people who wear longer boots.

As Oxford Products already own 30% I wonder if they'll pounce on the rest.

This is not a good time for the motorcycle trade. Confused

Jolly Bavarian, surely.

I wonder how J&S are doing? They used to be competitive with the fire sale eBay sellers, but seem to have drifted upwards slightly, to what I'd hope are sustainable prices.

They could take this as a warning shot across the bows to not try and get too uppity, or as an opportunity to scoop what's left of the "£99 glove" market. Thinking

Well this announcement was a small pain for me. Ordered a pretty specific tank bag from a store yesterday, only to find this out. Wanted to be able to test it for size before taking it him.

Not wanting to lost my £80, I phoned them up to get a refund. They didn't even know that the company was in administration, and suggested that keeping my order with them would be fine. Got a refund anyway and ordered online.

It's not surprising really, you walk into an near empty warehouse style store. With very little to fill it and generally no customers.

I think they'll have trouble finding someone to buy this as a going concern, because it's obvious it isn't.

If it were me...
I'd consolidate and make the best of the best stores and save the brand for the UK, lower the prices and concentrate on the Internet image/brand model. They'd be a few job losses but not wholesale.
