pulling out of my local retail park in shrewsbury, stopped at the little junction outside blockbuster and the women in the car gave the hand wave to let me go out, did the little thank you nod and started to pull off, at the same time i started to pull off she did as well came very close to hitting me, and she had a face on her as if to say why are you going when i am ................

really annoying, does this happen to other people or just me cause its happened a few times.

Never forget Rule #1 of biking - treat all other road users as idiots. You can't go far wrong if you lays remember this one.

Someone did a new one yesterday... at a red, they pulled up in the right-turn-only lane intending to outdrag me and get in front of my straight-on lane. Braindead cretin obviously thought his decrepid Jap import could do it easily... it didn't... I set off fairly briskly (having no idea what he was about to do or I'd have just let him in) and he only managed to get the nose of his car a few inches in front of my front wheel as his roadspace was coming to an end... I realised what he was doing and had to steer and brake to let him barge through.

I think there should be a thread about misunderstandings/near misses/crap drivers, like the Spill Counter thread... because the OP's tale isn't really threadworthy on its own (imo) but does have a place somewhere

Just a quick question, what is "The signal to pull out"? All the advanced riders/drivers I know have never mentioned such a signal and I've never been taught one, am I missing out? Thinking.

On a more serious note, it's taught by almost all driving/riding instructors I know that you do not respond to anyone who is "flashing" you or "waving you on" to go out as it doesn't take much for them to pull out on you in a huffy mood because you take too long to go when in reality you could just be (especially on a bike) getting the bike into gear and getting ready to pull off. In reality, I do "flash" people to say "go before me" but it depends on the junction and who has right of way, I won't flash anyone if I have right of way, that's just asking for a problem.

My point is, if someone "flashes" you or does some other hand-wavey magic signal meant to tell you to go before them, check everything before you go and, if in doubt, just return the signal or wait for them to go as you could end up being on the bonnet of said car instead of on your bike. Laughing.

Watch the wheels, not the face.

my road narrows as it goes up the hill, widens out a bit and loops back round in towards town.

As it loops round the top it twists lots and has lots of parked cars around.

The other day I checked a stretch was clear and proceeded up it (parked cars on the opposite side of the road) A car came the other way, i'm guessing he checked the same time I did as the road curves it's not easy to be certain it's not blocked.

He stopped about a car length from me and two car lengths behind him was a space he could have pulled into (he must have seen me in time)

He then flashed his lights at me - no idea what he wanted as the road wasn't wide enough for us to squeeze past so I put the stand down, turned the bike off and went to speak to him.

Apparently he wanted me to go back so that he could come through, I refused and explained that he was, given the fact I was pointing up-hill, asking me to either risk walking the bike backwards down a hill where I might not be able to stop it, or paddle it backwards with my feet, again given the undulating nature of the road, might not be able to get to the brakes due to balancing the bike, or might just drop the bike. A U turn wasn't possible in my view.

Our argument was cut short by a builders van coming round the corner and stopping behind my bike, the car duly reversed into the gap (took him 2 mins) and all was good.
