Ok, so i have bought myself a 2002 CRF450R. It has recently developed a bottom end knock and upon inspection the big end bearing is dead so will have to get a new crankshaft for it.
I've never had the bottom end apart on any of my bikes as i've had no need to so this is all going to be new to me. Im fairly competent and have no issues with doing it and given how simple motocross engines are, this is a good oppertunity to learn how to split a crankcase.

I have a manual and have been looking into whats involved and have decided i may aswell replace all the bearings and seals whilst im in there, this is where i need a bit of advice. In my manual it specifies the codes for the bearings i need, this is the page from the manual

https://cdn.bikechatforums.com/files/crankcase__1280_x_720_.jpg

I've searched these bearing codes on ebay and most of the bearings are readily available, problem is the bearings are all sealed and i think a lot, if not all the bearings in there will be open sided to allow constant fresh lubrication? could i just pop off the internal seal on each bearing or are these bearings not fit for this purpose?

This is an example of one of the bearings i found by searching the code in the manual.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-x-6306-2rs-30x72x19-CHROME-rubber-sealed-BEARING-/360582964365?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item53f46b648d&_uhb=1

I can find the actual honda part numbers for these bearings but they will likely be alot more expensive and i wonder if they would use the same bearing but with one side unsealed?

Like i say, i've never done any crankcase work before so am just a bit confused at the minute so any help would be greatly appreciated Thumbs Up Karma

Its fine to just pop the seals off if required, I,ve always use simplybearings.com in the past.

I would use a know brand such as FAG or SKF rather than cheap Chinese bearings off ebay.

just noticed, one of the main crank bearings (6306) will be included in my order, is it best to go for OEM on the crank bearing or will the FAG 6306 bearing on that site be just as good?

Only reason i ask is that that same bearing is £25 for a specified crf crank bearing and it's only £7 on that site?

The other crank bearing is a special type so i'm gonna have to bite the bullet on that one.

As already said, you can simply prize the seals/shields off the side of the bearings.

I've just completely rebuilt my 1988 CR 250 and the only bearing I had to buy from Honda was the output shaft bearing, but was only £15 + P&P.

Have you tried these guys:-
https://www.spirebearings.co.uk/
They're not far away from you and will probably give you a better service than the ebay Del boys.

been working on this today and have split the cases and replaces all but one of the bearings as i'm not sure where i stand with it.
Its the right hand crankshaft bearing marked as 6306 on the manual diagram above.. I decided to go for the FAG bearing instead of the OEM one and there is a slight difference.
The proper honda bearing has a rebate cut into the outer case to allow for some retainer plates and the replacement fag one has no rebate. This is a pic of the right hand crankcase and bearing retainers.

https://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd209/honda_atc110/2009%20CRF450%202/011.jpg

Im not quite sure what the point of these little plates is as the bearing fits as tightly as any other bearing does so has no chance of just dropping out or spinning in its housing, took a fair amount of persuasion to get it out.

so the question is, should i be ok to fit the new bearing and leave the little plates out? personally i cant see a problem with it as it cant go anywhere once the cranks in anyway, but thought i'd just ask some opinions incase theres a reason im missing for these retainers.

Edit* the left hand crank bearing doesnt have any retainer plates, which is whats making me think i'd be ok.
